Book Description
L'OBJECTIF DE L'ETUDE EST LE DEVELOPPEMENT D'UN SYSTEME DE PREVISION DE PLUIE PAR RADAR, QUI EST ADAPTE AUX BESOINS DE L'HYDROLOGIE URBAINE. UN SYSTEME AUTOMATISE STRUCTURE, BAPTISE PROPHETIA, EST PRESENTE, DONT LE FONCTIONNEMENT EST BASE SUR L'OBSERVATION DES CELLULES DE PLUIE. L'ALGORITHME DE PREVISION DE PLUIE DE PROPHETIA COMPREND QUATRE ETAPES: (1) IDENTIFICATION ET DESCRIPTION DES ECHOS DES CELLULES; (2) APPARIEMENT DES ECHOS DES CELLULES; (3) CARACTERISATION DES CELLULES; (4) PREVISION DE PLUIE PAR EXTRAPOLATION DES CARACTERISTIQUES DANS L'AVENIR. UNE TECHNIQUE DE SEUILLAGE EST APPLIQUEE POUR L'IDENTIFICATION DES CELLULES. POUR LEUR APPARIEMENT SUR DES IMAGES SUCCESSIVES, UNE BASE DE REGLES SOUS LA FORME D'UN ARBRE DE DECISION A ETE CONSTITUEE PAR APPRENTISSAGE AUTOMATIQUE A PARTIR D'EXEMPLES, QUI ONT ETE DEFINIS MANUELLEMENT. LA TRES BONNE PERFORMANCE DE LA BASE DE REGLES EST MISE EN EVIDENCE PAR LA COMPARAISON AVEC LES APPARIEMENTS MANUELS. LA QUALITE DE PREVISION ATTEINTE PAR PROPHETIA EST COMPAREE A CELLE D'AUTRES SYSTEMES DE PREVISION. PROPHETIA EST SURTOUT PLUS PERFORMANTE POUR LES PLUIES CONVECTIVES. L'EXAMEN DETAILLE DES ERREURS DE LA PREVISION PAR PROPHETIA DEMONTRE QUE LEUR ORIGINE PROVIENT DE L'HYPOTHESE D'ABSENCE DE DEVELOPPEMENT DES CELLULES A L'HORIZON DE LA PREVISION. L'ETUDE DES FACTEURS INFLUANT SUR LE DEVELOPPEMENT DES CELLULES MENE A LA PROPOSITION D'UN MODELE DES CELLULES RELIANT LE DEVELOPPEMENT AUX MASSES D'AIR ALIMENTANT LA CELLULE. LA LOCALISATION DU DEVELOPPEMENT DES CELLULES DE PLUIE CONVECTIVE DE LA BASE DE DONNEES EST POSSIBLE ET APPORTERAIT UN GAIN DE PREVISION SI LE TAUX DE CE DEVELOPPEMENT POUVAIT ETRE PREDIT, COMME CELA EST DEMONTRE POUR UN ECHANTILLON DE 12 PLUIES CONVECTIVES. OR CELUI-CI DEPEND DE LA POSSIBILITE DE CARACTERISER CORRECTEMENT LES SECTEURS GEOGRAPHIQUES D'INFLUENCE DIFFERENTE SUR LA CONVECTION: UNE MEILLEURE CARACTERISATION DE CES SECTEURS DEVRAIT ETRE L'OBJECTIF QUI SUIVRAIT CELLE-CI

Book Description
Hydroinformatics systems are systems that combine computational hydraulic modelling with information systems (including knowledge-based systems). They are gaining rapid acceptance in the areas of environmental planning, design and management. The present book focuses exclusively on sewage systems, starting with their planning and then going on to discuss their design, operation and rehabilitation. The very experienced authors discuss business and information needs in the management of urban drainage, tools for collecting and archiving such data, and their use in modelling catchment hydrology, sewer systems hydraulics, wastewater quality, wastewater treatment plant operation, and receiving waters. The control and operation of sewer systems in real time is described, followed by a discussion of their maintenance and rehabilitation. Intelligent decision support systems for managing the urban drainage business process are presented. Audience: Researchers into sewer design, municipal engineers, planners and managers interested in an innovative approach to all aspects of the planning, design and operation of sewer systems.

Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of the International Confer ence on Artificial Neural Networks which was held between September 13 and 16 in Amsterdam. It is the third in a series which started two years ago in Helsinki and which last year took place in Brighton. Thanks to the European Neural Network Society, ICANN has emerged as the leading conference on neural networks in Europe. Neural networks is a field of research which has enjoyed a rapid expansion and great popularity in both the academic and industrial research communities. The field is motivated by the commonly held belief that applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics will benefit from a good understanding of the neural information processing properties that underlie human intelligence. Essential aspects of neural information processing are highly parallel execution of com putation, integration of memory and process, and robustness against fluctuations. It is believed that intelligent skills, such as perception, motion and cognition, can be easier realized in neuro-computers than in a conventional computing paradigm. This requires active research in neurobiology to extract com putational principles from experimental neurobiological find ings, in physics and mathematics to study the relation between architecture and function in neural networks, and in cognitive science to study higher brain functions, such as language and reasoning. Neural networks technology has already lead to practical methods that solve real problems in a wide area of industrial applications. The clusters on robotics and applications contain sessions on various sub-topics in these fields.

Book Description
This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.

Book Description
Aeronomy, Part A is an attempt to make a comprehensive exposition of the processes in aeronomy, the study of composition, movement, and thermal balance of the upper regions of the planetary atmosphere. The text covers topics such as atmospheric regions and atmospheric density, the temperature and molecular mass of the atmosphere; the permanent constituents and the molecular and isotonic composition of the homosphere; and the transition from the homosphere to the heterosphere. Also covered are topics such as the temperature gradient and energies in the thermosphere, conditions at 200km and above 250km, solar radiation and ionization, and aeronomic reactions. The book is recommended for scientists, especially natural physicists, who would like to know more about the field of aeronomy and its advances.
