Book Description
Remarkable advances in imaging have increased the importance of MRI for diagnostic, treatment and management of epilepsy. Neuroimaging of patients with epilepsy no longer simply deals with the technology and interpretation of images but also with issues of brain metabolism, energetics, cognition and brain dysfunction. The first edition of Magnetic Resonance in Epilepsy came into clinical practice in 1995 with a revolutionary idea; that is, MR is as important as EEG in the clinical management of patients with epilepsy. The second edition of Magnetic Resonance in Epilepsy, the only comprehensive text in the field of epilepsy neuroimaging, reviews fundamental concepts and new advances in MR technology, computerized analysis, MR spectroscopy, DWI and other neuroimaging techniques such as PET, SPECT and MEG application to the study of patients with epileptic disorders.*Provides a crucial update of recent advances in imaging techniques*Timely publication as subject of neuroimaging is a very "hot" area in both clinical epilepsy and basic neuroscience research*Editors are well-respected in this field

Jasper's Basic Mechanisms, Fourth Edition, is the newest most ambitious and now clinically relevant publishing project to build on the four-decade legacy of the Jasper's series. In keeping with the original goal of searching for "a better understanding of the epilepsies and rational methods of prevention and treatment.", the book represents an encyclopedic compendium neurobiological mechanisms of seizures, epileptogenesis, epilepsy genetics and comordid conditions. Of practical importance to the clinician, and new to this edition are disease mechanisms of genetic epilepsies and therapeutic approaches, ranging from novel antiepileptic drug targets to cell and gene therapies.

Book Description
Epilepsy is one of most frequent neurological disorders affecting about 50 million people worldwide and 50% of them have at least another medical problem in comorbidity; sometimes this is a the cause of the epilepsy itself or it is due to shared neurobiological links between epilepsy and other medical conditions; other times it is a long-term consequence of the antiepileptic drug treatment. The Comorbidities of Epilepsy offers an up-to-date, comprehensive overview of all comorbidities of epilepsy (somatic, neurological and behavioral), by international authorities in the field of clinical epileptology, with an emphasis on epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management. This book includes also a critical appraisal of the methodological aspects and limitations of current research on this field. Pharmacological issues in the management of comorbidities are discussed, providing information on drug dosages, side effects and interactions, in order to enable the reader to manage these patients safely. The Comorbidities of Epilepsy is aimed at all health professionals dealing with people with epilepsy including neurologists, epileptologists, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, epilepsy specialist nurses and clinical researchers. - Provides a comprehensive overview of somatic, neurological and behavioral co-morbidities of epilepsy - Discusses up-to-date management of comorbidities of epilepsy - Written by a group of international experts in the field

Book Description
Patients with brain tumor-related epilepsy (BTRE) suffer from two serious pathologies simultaneously – a brain tumor and a secondary form of epilepsy. Although there has been remarkable progress in BTRE research in recent years, it remains an on-going challenge for clinicians and continues to stimulate much debate in the scientific community. This volume is the first to be completely dedicated to BTRE, and in doing so it explores issues faced by the health care team as well as some of the novel and promising directions that future research may take. Epilepsy and Brain Tumors is not only a complete reference on BTRE but also a practical guide based on clinical experiences, with a comprehensive collection of presentations from international experts who share some of the latest discoveries and their approaches to tackling a wide range of difficult and complex issues. - Includes coverage of epidemiology, pathology and treatment of both primary and metastatic brain tumors - Offers additional insight into supportive care, incidence in children, focal epileptogenesis, clinical evaluation, antiepileptic drugs, surgical treatment, cognitive rehabilitation, and more - Chapters authored and edited by leaders in the field around the globe – the broadest, most expert coverage available

Book Description
An indispensable, single-volume resource on state-of-the-art epilepsy procedures from renowned international experts! Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting an estimated 1% of the population, about 20 to 30% of which experience seizures inadequately controlled by medical therapy alone. Advances in anatomic and functional imaging modalities, stereotaxy, and the integration of neuronavigation during surgery have led to cutting-edge treatment options for patients with medically refractory epilepsy. Operative Techniques in Epilepsy Surgery, Second Edition by Gordon Baltuch, Arthur Cukiert, and an impressive international group of contributors has been updated and expanded, reflecting the newest treatments for pediatric and adult epilepsy. Seven sections with 30 chapters encompass surgical planning, invasive EEG studies, cortical resection, intraoperative mapping, disconnection, neuromodulation, and further topics. Twelve cortical resection chapters cover surgical approaches such as amygdalohippocampectomy; hippocampal transection; frontal lobe, central region, and posterior quadrant resections; and microsurgery versus endoscopy for hypothalamic hamartomas. Disconnection procedures discussed in section five include corpus callosotomy, hemispherectomy, and endoscopic-assisted approaches. Well-established procedures such as vagus nerve and deep brain stimulation are covered in the neuromodulation section, while the last section discusses radiosurgery for medically intractable cases. Key Highlights Chapters new to this edition include endoscopic callosotomy, laser-induced thermal therapy (LITT), and focused ultrasound High-quality illustrations, superb operative and cadaver photographs, radiologic images, and tables enhance understanding of impacted anatomy and specific techniques The addition of videos provides insightful step-by-step procedural guidance This is an essential reference for fellows and residents interested in epilepsy and functional neurosurgery, and an ideal overview for neurosurgeons, neurologists, and neuroradiologists in early career stages who wish to pursue this subspecialty.

Book Description
InJuly 1982 the first Dartmouth workshop on the corpus callosum took place. A nucleus of basic and clinical scientists was convened to give progress reports of their work on the corpus callosum. This text was subsequently compiled by the various participants from these reports modified by a stimulating cross fertilization of ideas and subsequent studies. Four and one-half decades have intervened since Van Wagenen first sectioned the corpus callosum for epilepsy (Van Wagenen and Herren, 1940) and Erickson (1940) demonstrated that the corpus callosum is the major route for generalization of experimentally induced focal cortical epilepsy. During the succeeding 45 years a handful of clinicians has pursued these leads to confirm the therapeutic value of callosotomy for some types of medically intractable generalized epilepsy. Parallel experimental studies with a number of epilepsy models have indicated that the corpus callosum is indeed the major route for seizure generalization, that the brainstem is a secondary and more resistant pathway for seizure generalization, and that most if not all epileptic seizures originate from the cerbral cortex. The unexpected clinical finding that even partial (focal) seizure incidence is modified by callosotomy now has been demonstrated in the laboratory. The various contributors to the clinical and experimental epilepsy sections of this volume have been seminal in these elucidations, as will be evident from their chapters. The section on the development, anatomy, and physiology of the corpus callosum demonstrates that these basic areas of study have not been neglected.
