Book Description
5t The 1 International Moxifloxacin symposium took place in Berlin Germany February 18 - 20,1999. The purpose of this meeting was to introduce the medical and scientific communities to this exciting new fluoroquinolone and to define its role in the management of respiratory tract infections. The fluoroquinolones as a class are an important part of our therapeutic armamentarium and moxi floxacin is a unique addition to this class of compounds. This symposium brought together physician/scientists from around the world to present and discuss the moxifloxacin data. The information from this important meeting are presented in these proceedings and are organized under the following headings: Part I Antimicrobial chemotherapy Part II Pre-clinical microbiology Part III Pharmacology Part IV Clinical needs in the millennium Part V Round table discussion The modifications to the basic quinolone structure resulting in moxifloxacin have produced a drug with unique in vitro, and pharmacokinetic/pharmaco dynamic properties. The drug has a very broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity, is well absorbed and can be taken only once daily. Its profile makes it an excellent therapeutic option for many types of respiratory tract infections. It is hoped that our clinical and laboratory colleagues will be as excited by this data as we are and we look forward to further work with this unique and interesting compound.

Book Description
Rapid progress in molecular biology, genetic engineering, and basic research in immunology has opened up new possibilities for application to diagnostic procedures and to clinical research. In a short period a new era of diagnosis dawned, covering nearly all fields of microbiology, immunology, and food technology. In consequence of this rapid development, scientists of many disciplines are involved studying infections of humans, animals, and plants or working in technical microbiology. The application of the newest findings of basic research to diagnostic work and to clinical research covers nearly all fields of microbiology and immunology. Moreover, it underlines the close relationship between diagnosis, therapy, and epidemiology. An outstanding example of these connections is given by the recent development of hepatitis B vaccine. The discovery and identification of a non cultivable agent by physicochemical and immunological methods were the heralds of a new era in the prevention of infectious diseases. This book provides an up-to-date, comprehensive review of developments and future aspects in various fields. I am convinced that the authors have succeeded in furnishing a large variety of new ideas and possibilities. K.-O. Book Description
As the need for attentive health care becomes more important than ever, on-the-job risks to physicians, nurses, and related professionals have continued to relentlessly increase. Ever-changing technology, new and unforeseen hazards, the dramatic shift to managed care, and a lack of skilled workers have only heightened the difficulties of maintaining safe environments for caregivers and patients alike. For guidance on health care worker protection, safety specialists have found definitive advice and guidance in William Charney's Essentials of Modern Hospital Safety, Volumes I to III -introduced by Lewis Publishers during the early 1990s. Charney now offers all the important details of that three-volume series, combined with an additional volume's worth of information, in a convenient, single-volume Handbook of Modern Hospital Safety. It's a tragic irony: the industry dedicated to healing and recovery has now become the second highest compensable injury sector-even more hazardous than manufacturing. Make sure your health care professionals have the skills, tools and awareness to protect themselves-and, in turn, their patients-with the Handbook of Modern Hospital Safety.

Book Description
Within the field of infectious diseases, medical mycology has experienced significant growth over the last decade. Invasive fungal infections have been increasing in many patient populations, including: those with AIDS; transplant recipients; and the elderly. As these populations grow, so does the diversity of fungal pathogens. Paralleling this development, there have been recent launches of several new antifungal drugs and therapies. Clinical Mycology offers a comprehensive review of this discipline. Organized by types of fungi, this volume covers microbiologic, epidemiologic and demographic aspects of fungal infections as well as diagnostic, clinical, therapeutic, and preventive approaches. Special patient populations are also detailed.
