Book Description
Compressive strength tests on concrete cores taken from existing bridge structuers are often used as a tool in evaluating the strength of the existing structure. Some difficulties are, however, encountered in interpreting the result of these tests and incorporating appropriate values in the usual equations for determining strength of structural members. In this paper, relationships between core tests, cylinder tests, and in situ strength ar reviewed based on data reported in the literature. Methods for incorporating core test data into a limit states design approach for strength evalulation are investigated. A method is proposed to convert data from compressive strength tests on cores into an equivalent design compressive strength that can be used in the normal design equations for strength. The method is applied to the analysis of an existing bridge for which core test data are available.

Book Description
The use of concrete cores and nondestructive testing for strength evaluation of existing structures is illustrated through an evaluation of an existing concrete bridge. the results confirm that rebound hammer number should not be used alone as an indicator of in situ compressive strength. reasonably good correlation is demonstrated between pulse velocity and compressive strength, with a slight improvement when pulse velocity and rebound number are combined. a probabilistic approach to structural evaluation of existing structures is proposed in whih the variability of in situ concrete compression strength and uncertainty associated with indirect nondestructive testing are incorporated. an example of shear strength is given, which indicates a range of increase in shear strength compared with initial design parameters of 17-37% depending on the amount and type of data available.

Book Description
Load Testing of Bridges, featuring contributions from almost fifty authors from around the world across two interrelated volumes, deals with the practical aspects, the scientific developments, and the international views on the topic of load testing of bridges. Volume 13, Load Testing of Bridges: Proof Load Testing and the Future of Load Testing, focuses first on proof load testing of bridges. It discusses the specific aspects of proof load testing during the preparation, execution, and post-processing of such a test (Part 1). The second part covers the testing of buildings. The third part discusses novel ideas regarding measurement techniques used for load testing. Methods using non-contact sensors, such as photography- and video-based measurement techniques are discussed. The fourth part discusses load testing in the framework of reliability-based decision-making and in the framework of a bridge management program. The final part of the book summarizes the knowledge presented across the two volumes, as well as the remaining open questions for research, and provides practical recommendations for engineers carrying out load tests. This work will be of interest to researchers and academics in the field of civil/structural engineering, practicing engineers and road authorities worldwide.
