Hochschulen, die Übersetzer- und Dolmetscher ausbilden, haben es sich folglich zur Aufgabe zu machen, diesen Kriterien zu entsprechen, d.h. ihre Programme und Ausbildungsmethoden neuen Forderungen anzupassen. Um aber diesen Anforderungen des Arbeitsmarktes gerecht werden zu können, ist eine regelmässige Zusammenarbeit zwischen Lehre und Praxis unbedingt erforderlich, ein Tatbestand, dem bisher nur sporadisch und punktuell Rechnung getragen wurde. Das CIUTI-Forum hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, eine Plattform für einen konstruktiven Meinungsaustausch zwischen Lehre und Praxis zu schaffen. Die Teilnehmer beleuchten das Profil des Übersetzers von beiden Seiten. Dabei werden auch neue Mittel und Wege des methodologischen Vorgehens in der Ausbildung aufgezeigt, um den neuen Anforderungen gerecht zu werden. Andererseits stellt der Markt hier neue, institutionalisierte Gremien vor, die sich vor einem weltweiten, innovativen Vorgehen in Richtung Zusammenarbeit mit den Hochschulen nicht scheuen.

It is widely recognised that optimum translation quality is often difficult to achieve owing to problems in the source text. For large-scale cross-cultural surveys source questionnaires need to be translated into multiple target languages in order to produce comparable data across participating countries and cultures. ‘Advance translations’ have been applied in such surveys to improve the translatability of source questionnaires. The author used a think-aloud study to test the usefulness of advance translation into French and German. The study involved experienced professional questionnaire translators and applied qualitative and quantitative analysis. The study confirmed the usefulness of advance translation, at least for the languages and source texts used.

The study of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) has grown considerably in the last decades, and a wide number of issues related to this field have been addressed through a variety of lenses. Wang presents the status quo of curriculum development in professional interpreting programmes in China and points to the urgency to devise a curriculum improvement model to ensure the relevance of such programmes against a changing reality. She covers the European experience in interpreter education that China can learn from and discusses opportunities arising from previous examples for China to iterate upon in the context of the broader and more diverse professional reality. The book puts the nature of professional interpreters and, in turn, interpreting programmes, under the concurring lens of curriculum studies and the sociology of professions. Wang identifies eight stakeholders which call for changes in interpreting programmes, and six categories of competence (or sub-competence) which see a progression from undergraduate to graduate and lifelong-learning stage. These serve as curriculum goals and encapsulate the recommended changes in institutional curricula. The conceptualised model is then described with a case study on Chinese-English retour training to show its applicability and relevance in interpreting programmes on the ground.
