Farhad Ghassemi Tari was born in Tehran, Iran. He currently resides in Oxnard, California. The author completed his Ph. D. program in Operations Research (applied mathematical programming) and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1980. Right after his graduation, he started teaching at Sharif University of Technology for thirty-six years, where he retired as an associate professor. During this time, he conducted research projects and taught several undergraduate and graduate courses, mostly in mathematical programming such as Linear Programming, Integer and Dynamic Programming, Nonlinear Programming, Sequencing and Scheduling, and Quantitative Method in Managerial Decision Making. Tari has published more than eighty papers in scientific journals and has held conference proceedings from the research results. His hobbies include reading books and listening to classical music. He also likes cooking. Mathematics I and its complement volume, Intermediate Mathematics II systematically describe concepts and tools that are crucial to every college student who are willing to attain solid base for more advance mathematical topics. There are a great deal of books on introductory analysis in print today, many written by mathematicians of the first rank. The publication of another such book therefore warrants a defense. I have taught analysis for many years and have used a variety of texts during this time. These books were of excellent quality mathematically but did not satisfy the needs of the students I was teaching. They were written for mathematicians but not for those who were first aspiring to attain that status. The desire to fill this gap gave rise to the writing of this book. This book is intended to serve as a text for an introductory course in analysis. Its readers will most likely be mathematics, science, or engineering majors undertaking the last quarter of their undergraduate education. The aim of a first course in analysis is to provide the student with a sound foundation for analysis, to familiarize him with the kind of careful thinking used in advanced mathematics, and to provide him with tools for further work in it. The typical student we are dealing with has completed a three-semester calculus course and possibly an introductory course in differential equations. He may even have been exposed to a semester or two of modern algebra. All this time his training has most likely been intuitive with heuristics taking the place of proof. This may have been appropriate for that stage of his development.

The text is designed for use in a forty-lecture introductory course covering linear algebra, multivariable differential calculus, and an introduction to real analysis. The core material of the book is arranged to allow for the main introductory material on linear algebra, including basic vector space theory in Euclidean space and the initial theory of matrices and linear systems, to be covered in the first ten or eleven lectures, followed by a similar number of lectures on basic multivariable analysis, including first theorems on differentiable functions on domains in Euclidean space and a brief introduction to submanifolds. The book then concludes with further essential linear algebra, including the theory of determinants, eigenvalues, and the spectral theorem for real symmetric matrices, and further multivariable analysis, including the contraction mapping principle and the inverse and implicit function theorems. There is also an appendix which provides a nine-lecture introduction to real analysis. There are various ways in which the additional material in the appendix could be integrated into a course--for example in the Stanford Mathematics honors program, run as a four-lecture per week program in the Autumn Quarter each year, the first six lectures of the nine-lecture appendix are presented at the rate of one lecture per week in weeks two through seven of the quarter, with the remaining three lectures per week during those weeks being devoted to the main chapters of the text.
