Book Description
The Miller/O'Neill/Hyde author team continues to offer an enlightened approach grounded in the fundamentals of classroom experience in Intermediate Algebra 3e. The practice of many instructors in the classroom is to present examples and have their students solve similar problems. This is realized through the Skill Practice Exercises that directly follow the examples in the textbook. Throughout the text, the authors have integrated many Study Tips and Avoiding Mistakes hints, which are reflective of the comments and instruction presented to students in the classroom. In this way, the text communicates to students the very points their instructors are likely to make during lecture, and this helps to reinforce the concepts and provide instruction that leads students to mastery and success. The authors included in this edition Problem-Recognition Exercises, that many instructors will likely identify to be similar to worksheets they have personally developed for distribution to students. The intent of the Problem-Recognition exercises is to help students overcome what is sometimes a natural inclination toward applying problem-solving algorithms that may not always be appropriate. In addition, the exercise sets have been revised to include even more core exercises than were present in the previous edition. This permits instructors to choose from a wealth of problems, allowing ample opportunity for students to practice what they learn in lecture to hone their skills and develop the knowledge they need to make a successful transition into College Algebra. In this way, the book perfectly complements any learning platform, whether traditional lecture or distance-learning; its instruction is so reflective of what comes from lecture, that students will feel as comfortable outside of class as they do inside class with their instructor. For even more support, students have access to a wealth of supplements, including McGraw-Hill’s online homework management system, MathZone.

Book Description
Miller/O'Neill Intermediate Algebra is an insightful text written by instructors who have first-hand experience with students of developmental mathematics. The authors introduce functions in Chapter 3 and do a very thorough treatment, devoting the entire chapter to the concept of functions. With such a solid foundation to build from, students will experience greater success when they encounter other function-related topics in later chapters, such as polynomial functions; quadratic functions; radical functions; and others. The authors have crafted the exercise sets with the idea of infusing review. In each set of practice exercises, instructors will find a set of exercises that help students to review concepts previously learned, and in this way, students will retain more of what they have learned. The exercise sets also contain "translation" exercises which provide students with an opportunity to convert from English phrases to mathematical symbols and from mathematical symbols to English phrases, thus helping students to strengthen their command of mathematical language. Moreover, the applications found in the exercise sets are based on real-world data, which helps to promote students' interest in mathematics, and in turn, may serve to motivate and engage them. Other features include mid-chapter reviews and classroom activities (classroom activities are worksheets that can be downloaded from the OLC or distributed by instructors since the classroom activities can be found in the IRM as well). The classroom activities are of special value, in that through their use, students may begin to take greater ownership over their own learning. The classroom activities were designed to be quick activities students could perform in class (either individually, or collaboratively in groups). In short, the Miller/O'Neill Intermediate Algebra text offers enriching applications, a high level of readability, and excellent opportunities for students to become actively engaged in their exploration of mathematics.

Book Description
Beginning and Intermediate Algebra: The Language and Symbolism of Mathematics emphasizes what great mathematicians had identified for generations - mathematics is everywhere! Authors James Hall and Brian Mercer believe active student involvement remains the key to learning algebra. Topics in the text are organized by using the principles of the AMATYC standards as a guide, giving strong support to teachers using the text. The book's organization and pedagogy are designed to work for students with a variety of learning styles and for teachers with varied experiences and backgrounds. The inclusion of the "rule of four" or multiple perspectives -- verbal, numerical, algebraic, and graphical -- has proven popular with a broad cross section of students. A key supplement for the text are the Lecture Guides. This supplement by the authors, with the assistance of Kelly Bails of Parkland College, provides instructors with the framework of day-by-day class activities for each section in the book. Each lecture guide can help instructors make more efficient use of class time and can help keep students focused on active learning. Students who use the lecture guides have the framework of well-organized notes that can be completed with the instructor in class.

Book Description
A Unified Text That Serves Your Needs. Most colleges offering elementary and intermediate algebra use two different texts, one for each course. As a result, students may be required to purchase two texts; this can result in a considerable amount of topic overlap. Over the last few years, several publishers have issued "combined" texts that take chapters from two texts and merge them into a single book. This has allowed students to purchase a single text, but it has done little to reduce the overlap. The goal of this author team has been to produce a text that was more than a combined text. They wanted to unify the topics and themes of beginning and intermediate algebra in a fluid, non-repetitive text. We also wanted to produce a text that will prepare students from different mathematical backgrounds for college algebra. We believe we have accomplished our goals. For students entering directly from an arithmetic or pre-algebra course, this is a text that contains all of the material needed to prepare for college algebra. It can be offered in two quarters or in two semesters. The new Review Chapter found between chapters 6 and 7 serves as a mid-book review for students preparing to take a final exam that covers the first seven chapters. Finally, we have produced a text that will accommodate those students placing into the second term of a two-term sequence. Here is where the Review Chapter is most valuable. It gives the students an opportunity to check that they have all of the background required to begin in Chapter 7. If the students struggle with any of the material in the Review Chapter, they are referred to the appropriate section for further review.
