Book Description

Book Description
Various kinds of mineralization have been found in many biological systems. Investigations made at a microscopical level using various sophisticated analytical methods and using principles developed in different fields have clarified their mechanisms very much. Sometimes, very similar phenomena have been found in the mineralized tissues of completely different biological systems. Compilation and comparative investigations of such findings obtained from the many specimens systematically collected contribute a great deal to an understanding of the crucial mechanisms and significance of biominerali zation which originated in very primitive organisms and remain in advanced ones. Previously, the functional significance of mineralized tissues was considered mainly from an anatomical point of view based upon their morphological and structural features. However, the recent advance of investigations has made it possible to interpret the func tional significance of biomineralization not only from local and mechanical points of view, but also from a systemic and phylogenetic point of view. It is also well-known that biomineralization has contributed in various ways to geological and oceanographical conditions of the environment in which the organisms were living. During this process, the mechanisms of biomineralization may have evolved to maintain harmony between organisms and their environments.

Book Description
The contents of this book touch on the all major dental biomaterials: polymers, composites, ceramics and metals. The first part introduces the readers to the surface physicochemical and mechanical characterizations at the nanoscopic level, and the use of finite element analysis. The second part discusses dental adhesion, resin-based composites, polymerization contraction stress, impression materials and soft liners for total prosthesis. The third part deals with ceramics in restorative dentistry: zirconia and lithium disilicate, the fractography of dental ceramics, as well as bioglass for bone growth. The fourth part discusses the toxicity of mercury in dentistry, and the use of preventive materials for dental diseases. The concluding part identifies imminent techniques for dental biomaterials, such as additive manufacturing (3D printing), and bioprinting in dentistry.

Book Description
Spanning 30 years of carefully controlled work, this book explains how nasal obstructions, the relationship between breathing patterns and vertical facial development, and secondary neuromuscular adaptations to obstructions may alter facial and dental structures. The authors describe radiographic techniques, enlargements, and measurements for both the lateral cephalogram and the 45-degree oblique view. Their discussion of clinical application of vertical changes in the jaws and dentition is a tour de force for the orthodontist, rhinologist, and pediatrician.

Book Description
The chapters of Studies on Periodontal Disease comprise four parts. Part 1 provides basic sciences from the general to the particular. The findings of cell culture and animal models supply the mechanism between periodontal disease and oxidative stress. In part 2, human clinical studies are mainly addressed. The effects of periodontal therapy on circulating oxidative stress are also discussed. The relationships between periodontal disease and systemic diseases are examined in part 3. The involvement of oxidative stress and inflammation are discussed through in vivo and in vitro study results. Part 4 discusses future strategies, including the effects of antioxidants and nutrition on periodontal disease. This thorough examination of the relationship between oxidative stress and periodontal disease is essential reading for researchers in oxidative stress and periodontal clinicians, alike.
