Book Description
The young and adolescents are an epitome of change, hope and progress. The lives of adolescents are subject to global challenges faced by information and technological revolution, changing markets and globalization, and specific changes taking place in family dynamics, cultural traditions, religious beliefs and other socialization practices. This book on Adolescence Education assumes importance in view of the likely impact of acquired skills and behaviours during this period on an individual’s prospects in adulthood. This book is an attempt to understand the broader context in which adolescent lives are embedded. The theoretical perspective presents a multi-disciplinary view of adolescence that helps to understand the evolution of the concept of adolescence. Presenting an elaborate account of adolescence as experienced by young in India and highlighting the challenges that emerge as a result of dynamic changes in society, the attempt is made to identify the emerging issues and concerns that impact the lives of adolescents and provide a perspective to adolescence education. The historical account presented helps to build an understanding of the various socio-cultural forces that led to the emergence of the existing Adolescence Education Programme (AEP). The text presents the key features of the present AEP that are imperative for its successful implementation. The UN and civil society initiatives are mapped with a view to locate the characteristic features and thrust of various interventions. Book Description
"The last decade has witnessed many changes in the sexual and reproductive health situation in India. The policy and programme environment has undergone a significant shift from a narrow target-oriented family planning approach to a broader orientation that stresses sexual and reproductive health and choice. There have also been changes in the context of sexual and reproductive health. Some changes, such as declining infant mortality, increased access to skilled attendance at delivery, and declining unmet need for contraception have been positive. Other trends are disturbing, such as stagnating levels of maternal mortality, the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) notably HIV, the persistence of wide gender imbalances and the limited exercise of reproductive rights by many, particularly women. Moreover, the decade has raised concern about the unique sexual and reproductive health needs of the young. It has also seen the absorption of new technologies into everyday sexual and reproductive life. Finally, while the need for a rights-based approach has been recognised, this has not been reflected in terms of government's accountability in the realisation of health rights. In short, despite the strides made on several fronts, India continues to face a situation of considerable sexual and reproductive ill health and lack of informed choice. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the reproductive health and rights situation and highlights major programmatic challenges and directions for policy-relevant empirical research on sexual and reproductive health in India.realisation of health rights. Book Description
Millions of pounds of international development funds are invested annually in social protection programmes to tackle poverty. Poverty is perpetuated by risk and vulnerability, much of which is gendered. Despite this, little attention has been paid to gender-sensitive policy and programme design and implementation. Gender and Social Protection in the Developing World introduces a much-needed gender lens to these debates. Drawing on empirical evidence from poor households and communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America, the book provides rich insight into the effects of a range of social protection instruments. It concludes that with relatively simple changes to design and with investment in implementation capacity, social protection can contribute to transforming gender relations at the individual, intrahousehold and community levels. With a foreword by Stephen Devereux.
