Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... PART IV. CHAPTER I. Targets. 375. The simplest method of determining the proficiency of the soldier at any time, is to divide the target into various divisions and to give to hits in these divisions a value, constant for all points in any one space, but increasing as the division lies nearer the central point of the target. This method gives a sufficiently accurate expression for the results of the soldier's firing. 376. As the targets used by the armies of different foreign nations are widely dissimilar, both in the shape and the number and size of their various divisions, it is not possible, even if it were considered desirable, to so arrange the targets for our service that any comparison can be instituted between the practice of our soldiers and those of more than any one foreign country. It therefore seems preferable to select the shape and proportions suggested by the natural variations of the arm, by the average degree and direction of the proficiency desired from and attainable by the soldier, and by the distances considered sufficient for his instruction. 377. The limited amount of ammunition and time available for practice have necessitated the selection sf certain ranges for the soldier's instruction, and the omission of others; and while for many reasons it would be preferable to adopt for each of the chosen distances its appropriate target, the additional complication and the added labor and expense that would result make it more desirable to employ the same target for at least two ranges. 378. For the short range practice at 200 and 300 yards, and for the instruction of the recruit at 100 yards, one target will therefore be used. For practice at the mid ranges, 500 and 600 yards, another target, and for the longer ranges, ..
