Una por una, Bowles y Gintis derriban las bases circunstanciales de las suposiciones, incontrovertibles hasta la fecha, que han usado tanto conservadores como reformadores para justificar o disculpar los aspectos desiguales y autoritarios de la vida social norteamericana y muestran que el papel de la educación en el incremento del desarrollo mental no explica porqué la gente con mayor educación recibe mayores ingresos (ni “la herencia del cociente intelectual” explica por qué los hijos de los ricos se hacen ricos y los hijos de los pobres, pobres); que los grados escolares están estrechamente relacionados con la personalidad de los estudiantes, así como con su habilidad mental (y el sistema escolar recompensa los mismos rasgos de la personalidad que el mercado de trabajo); y, por último, lo más importante: que en la actualidad, como siempre, el éxito en la escuela, como en la sociedad norteamericana, depende de factores como la riqueza y la raza de los padres. Las reformas educativas que aspiran a crear un sistema participativo democrático en las escuelas pueden, según los autores, volverse parte integral de los esfuerzos por inducir el cambio social dondequiera. El libro muestra, además, el camino hacia el tipo de reforma educativa que lograría esta meta.
