Inscriptions on Tombstones and Monuments in the Burying Grounds of the First Presbyterian Church and St. Johns Church at Elizabeth, New Jersey
Author: William Ogden Wheeler
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780266599968
Category : Reference

Pages : 394
Book Description
Excerpt from Inscriptions on Tombstones and Monuments in the Burying Grounds of the First Presbyterian Church and St. Johns Church at Elizabeth, New Jersey: 1664-1892 It is probable that for a long time the church and adjoining burial-ground was not enclosed, or if at all, only in a rude way. In 1762, immediately after the settlement of Rev. Mr. Caldwell, it was voted by the Trustees that 'the burial-ground be enclosed with a close, cedar-board fence; also agreed that a neat pale-fence be built to enclose a court-yard in the front and south end of the church.' In this old churchyard lie the forefathers of Elizabeth, and of many whose names are known throughout the State. Here are buried Rev. Jonathan Dickinson, Dr. John mcdowell, Rev. James Caldwell, Hon. Elias Boudinot, Robert Ogden, Ist, Gen. Matthias Ogden, Gov. Aaron Ogden, Dr. Nicholas Murray, Shepard Kollook and many others prominent in the history of the country. Many of the headstones are crumbling with age and their lettering will soon become illegible. It was with a view to preserve, as well as to place in a form more convenient to the historian and genealogist, these inscriptions, that the authors of this work caused copies to be carefully made and this book to be printed. The order of location, rather than that of the alphabet has been observed believing that the directions to the Sexton, made in 1766, that he is carefully to observe in the burial of the Dead, to keep the Bodies of the Respective particular Families of the Congregation together as much as possibly can be done, has been generally observed and that relationship may in many cases be indicated by situation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy.
