Book Description
This volume examines the involvement of minority- or women-owned businesses in technology-based research, with particular focus on the differences in research outcomes in achieving commercialization. Specifically, the authors empirically investigate the correlation between technologies from projects funded through the Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and the minority or gender demographics of the owners of the businesses conducting the research. This study offers an opportunity to not only examine public-sector agencies’ investments in research, but also to investigate if there are race and/or gender gaps in such business’ participation in innovative activities. It also provides a means to understand innovation by minorities and women in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Investments in fundamental science and technology research and investments in human capital through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education are important building blocks of innovation. Two methods of fueling innovation are to 1) accelerate the commercialization of federally funded research and 2) ensure opportunities for underrepresented minorities and women in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Despite this understanding, there is still a disparity in the rates of educated men and women in STEM fields participating in entrepreneurship. Moreover, the link between underrepresentation of minorities and women across STEM fields correlates with entrepreneurial entry and performance. This book expands on these findings and estimates the probability that (1) a funded research project reaches completion, (2) the developed technology is commercialized, and finally (3) the commercialized technology is successful in the marketplace (i.e., the business gained revenue and market share from the technology).
Innovative Activity in Minority-Owned and Women-Owned Business
Innovative Behavior of Minorities, Women, and Immigrants
Author: Albert N. Link
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000790061
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 177
Book Description
The relationship between the innovative behavior and the minority status, gender, and immigration status of, for example, owners, directors, principal investigators, and project managers has only begun to be explored, especially within and among entrepreneurial organizations. Data limitations are certainly one culprit for the paucity of research in this area, but also the economics literature has been slow to move from a technical capital (i.e., investments in R&D) to an innovative behavior focus to an alternative focus that examines the relationship between dimensions of human capital of those who are involved with R&D investments and resulting innovative behavior. The chapters in this edited volume advance this body of thought. These chapters represent foundational research for a nature versus nurture discussion as it relates to innovative behavior, especially a discussion that considers the innovative behavior within and among entrepreneurial organizations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Economics of Innovation and New Technology.

Beyond Discovery
Author: Jean E. Schelhorn
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0197512712
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
Academic discoveries account for some of the most successful products in the marketplace, from pharmaceutical blockbusters like Lyrica® to household names like GatoradeTM. Yet few researchers understand the process of technology transfer or the various pathways for commercialization available to them.Beyond Discovery is the ultimate guide for researchers interested in moving their inventions from the laboratory to the marketplace. Focusing particularly on scientists and engineers, this volume demystifies the process of commercialization by offering clarity on key complex topics, including technology transfer, intellectual property, and the uneven landscape for inventors of different genders and ethnicities. The authors describe how academics must adapt their thinking and provide numerous best practices for advancing through this unfamiliar and demanding terrain, with profiles of current scientists and engineers to illustrate how academic inventions have translated to commercial success. Beyond Discovery also offers realistic recommendations to academic institutions for engaging their researchers in the commercialization enterprise.Comprehensive and pragmatic, Beyond Discovery illustrates how commercialization can deepen the impact of academic research and offers seasoned advice for each step in the technology transfer process.

Technology Fears and Scapegoats
Author: Robert D. Atkinson
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031523490
Category : Technological innovations
Languages : en
Pages : 332
Book Description
Technologies and tech companies are routinely accused of creating many societal problems. This book exposes these charges as mostly myths, falsehoods, and exaggerations. Technology Fears and Scapegoats debunks 40 widespread myths about Big Tech, Big Data, AI, privacy, trust, polarization, automation, and similar fears, while exposing the scapegoating behind these complaints. The result is a balanced and positive view of the societal impact of technology thus far. The book takes readers through the steps and mindset necessary to restore the West's belief in technological progress. Each individual chapter provides a cogent and often controversial rebuttal to a common tech accusation. The resulting text will inspire conversations among tech insiders, policymakers, and the general public alike. Robert D. Atkinson is the founder and president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the world's leading science and technology policy think tank. His previous books include Big is Beautiful (The MIT Press, 2018), Innovation Economics (Yale, 2012), Supply-Side Follies (Rowman Littlefield, 2007), and The Past and Future of America’s Economy (Edward Elgar, 2005). David Moschella is a nonresident senior fellow at ITIF, in charge of its "Defending Digital" project. For more than a decade, Moschella was Head of Worldwide Research for IDC. His previous books include Seeing Digital (DXC Technology, 2018), Customer-Driven IT (Harvard Business School Press, 2003), and Waves of Power (AMACOM, 1997). He has lectured and consulted on technology trends and strategies in more than 30 countries.
