Transnational Corporations and the Internationalization of R&D
Author: United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
Publisher: United Nations Publications
ISBN: 9789211126679
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
This annual report examines changing trends in foreign direct investment (FDI) flows worldwide, at the regional and country levels and emerging measures to improve its contribution to development. The 2005 edition focuses on the internationalisation of research and development by transnational corporations and its policy implications for innovation, economic growth and development. Findings for the year 2004 show that, after three years of decline in global investment flows, there was a rise of two per cent overall compared to the previous year. This growth was led by the increase in FDI flows to developing countries of 40 per cent, whilst developed countries experienced a 14 per cent drop in their inward FDI. As a result, the share of developing countries in world FDI inflows reached 36 per cent, the highest level since 1997.

Knowledge Production in the Arab World
Author: Sari Hanafi
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317364090
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 422
Book Description
Over recent decades we have witnessed the globalization of research. However, this has yet to translate into a worldwide scientific network, across which competencies and resources can flow freely. Arab countries have strived to join this globalized world and become a ‘knowledge economy,’ yet little time has been invested in the region’s fragmented scientific institutions; institutions that should provide opportunities for individuals to step out on the global stage. Knowledge Production in the Arab World investigates research practices in the Arab world, using multiple case studies from the region with particular focus on Lebanon and Jordan. It depicts the Janus-like face of Arab research, poised between the negative and the positive and faced with two potentially opposing strands; local relevance alongside its internationalization. The book critically assesses the role and dynamics of research and poses questions that are crucial to further our understanding of the very particular case of knowledge production in the Arab region. The book explores research’s relevance and whom it serves, as well as the methodological flaws behind academic rankings and the meaning and application of key concepts such as knowledge society/economy. Providing a detailed and comprehensive examination of knowledge production in the Arab world, this book is of interest to students, scholars and policy makers working on the issues of research practices and status of science in contemporary developing countries.

Enterprise Knowledge Capital
Author: Blandine Laperche
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119476550
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
Thoroughly grounded in an extensive body of international research and analysis, this book investigates the concepts surrounding a firm’s knowledge capital. These concepts play an integral part in the evolution of economic and managerial thinking, particularly in relation to the themes of firm, knowledge and innovation. The author advocates a greater socialization of the production of knowledge capital that stands in contradiction to the strong appropriation strategies that are predominant today. This book presents a historical analysis of the facts with a strong basis in the recent literature in economics and innovation management as well as in case studies of CAC 40 companies that have been conducted over the course of the past few years.
