Book Description
The results are described of numerous experiments on animals which have made it possible for the authors to clarify the important special characteristics of the clinical course, treatment, and outcome of infected wounds of the skull and brain in persons affected by penetrating radiation. The characteristics of the clinical manifestations and diagnostics of the injuries to the brain and intracranial infectious complications which develop during acute radiation sickness are discussed, and the results of surgical treatment and the use of various antibiotics are described. These experiments are used for recommending a broadening of the indications for using a primary blind suture. A method for using antibiotics is given which makes it possible to obtain satisfactory results in treating infected wounds of the skull and brain during acute radiation sickness, even when there is a considerable delay in the initial surgical treatment. (Author).
