Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Industrial Chemistry: A Text-Book for Students The object of this book is to furnish an elementary course in Industrial Chemistry, which may serve as the ground work for a more extended course of lectures, if desired. The writer has endeavored to describe briefly, within the limits of one moderate sized volume, the more important industrial chemical processes, but omitting matters of detail which properly belong in the larger hand books. Numerous references are made in the text to periodicals and journals, and to the standard hand-books and encyclopaedias and many special works, where details, lacking in this book, may be found. The bibliographical lists following each section are not complete, but only include those works which will usually be found in most chemical libraries; the references to the journal literature are merely those articles to which the author's attention has been drawn in the preparation of class-room exercises. The diagrams illustrating the text have, in most cases, been drawn as simply as possible, purposely showing only the essential features. Book Description
Excerpt from Laboratory Guide of Industrial Chemistry IN presenting this thoroughly revised edition, the author has endeavored to make the laboratory experiments touch more closely upon present-day problems than was possible in the first edition. It has been the aim to treat the subject in such a manner that the processes described for applica tion on a small scale can also be adopted to the larger commercial basis. Thus, in many instances, it will be noticed that the methods are those in common use at the present time, and, Whenever possible, actual factory prac tice has been followed. The object, therefore, is to acquaint the student of chemistry with actual commercial problems by bringing to his experience practical methods of hand ling materials on a large scale; the care and use of machinery; the cost of raw materials; transportation; wage system; the handling of men; and shop discipline. This idea is being carried out at Pratt Institute through a foremanship system of instruction, in which groups of students are assigned to work in model plants, one member of each group acting as foreman. The foreman is held responsible for the quality as well as the quantity of the output of his plant, must see that the machinery is left in perfect condition, and that the factory is kept clean. Book Description
Excerpt from The Chemistry of the Rubber Industry The object of the series of volumes collected together under the general title Outlines of Industrial Chemistry is to provide students and persons employed on the technical side of any particular industry with a handbook explaining the chemical aspect of the operations carried on in that industry. It is hoped, too, that the series may be found useful and interesting to many business heads and subordinates who are employed mainly in the office, but who still take an interest in the processes by which their dividends or salaries are earned. Book Description
Excerpt from Industrial Chemistry: For Engineering Students The purpose of this text is to describe from the standpoint of chemistry, the more common materials used in the various branches of engineering. Emphasis is accordingly laid upon the occurrence, the mode of manufacture, the properties, and, to a limited extent, the uses of the various materials. The text is an elaboration of the author's lecture notes used dur ing the last eight years in the courses of industrial chemistry for second year engineering students. The compilations of data have been taken from various sources, many Of which are indicated in the footnotes. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Industrial Chemistry The purpose in presenting this elementary work on Industrial Chemistry is to meet the needs of those teachers of the subject who find that the time at their disposal does not warrant the employment of an extended treatise. The author, therefore, has compiled from the Manual of Industrial Chemistry an abridged volume which covers the most salient points of the larger book. The endeavor has been, in arranging this con densation, to treat the subjects covered in a general manner only, thus eliminating as much of the detail as possible in order that the fundamental principles might be more clearly set forth. Although the subject matter is essentially descriptive, a certain amount of theoretical consideration has been included where necessary for the proper understanding of the text. Should the student desire more detailed information on the subject, or a more extended description of the processes under con sideration he is referred to the Manual from which this book is compiled. No claim for originality is made for this volume, and full credit should be given to those who contributed to the larger book mentioned above. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalysis in Industrial Chemistry Many other examples might be quoted, but at the same time it must be admitted that in at least Some cases of heterogeneous catalysis the physical theory appears to offer the only explanation of the action of the catalyst. It was long ago recognized that a catalyst has the same Chemical composition at the end of the reaction in which it has exerted an in uence. As at the beginning, but it must not be concluded that its physical state is necessarily the same after the reaction is over. On the contrary, the change in physical condition which in many cases the catalyst has undergone Shows that it has taken an active part in the reaction in the sense that an intermediate compound has been formed. For instance, when ammonia is decomposed into its elements by contact with heated metals there is a complete alteration in the physical state of the latter, which is undoubtedly due to the continuous formation and decomposition of metallic nitrides.
