Spanish Abstract: En esta investigación se analizaron las dimensiones del desarrollo sustentable, desde la perspectiva de la comunalidad, en servicios y actividades de ecoturismo de 35 comunidades indígenas de México. Se incluyó desarrollo local como dimensión económica, sustentabilidad comunitaria como dimensión social y la dimensión ambiental. Con base a indicadores de desarrollo local propuestos por Bañuelos Flores & Salido Araiza (2007), indicadores ambientales propuestos por la Secretaría de Turismo de México (SECTUR, 2013) e indicadores de sustentabilidad comunitaria desarrollados por Velázquez-Sánchez et al (2013), se diseñó y aplicó un cuestionario con 118 ítems a habitantes-participantes en proyectos de ecoturismo indígena en 13 estados de la república mexicana. Los resultados mostraron la definición de cinco categorías de desarrollo local, dos categorías ambientales y cuatro categorías de sustentabilidad comunitaria. Desde la perspectiva comunitaria, en el ecoturismo indígena, en los resultados se observó que existe relación positiva de las tres dimensiones del desarrollo sustentable. Este estudio provee una alternativa metodológica para el análisis del ecoturismo y del desarrollo sustentable.

Con los elementos de Martínez (2003) y las categorías en Robles y Cardoso (2009) de la sustentabilidad de las comunidades indígenas y debido a la falta de investigación de la relación desarrollo-sustentabilidad en el ecoturismo. En esta investigación se analizó medio natural y sustentabilidad en los servicios y actividades de ecoturismo en 80 comunidades indígenas de México. Se entrevistó a profundidad (fenomenologia) a ochenta expositores durante, Encuentro Nacional de Ecoturismo Indígena 2012. La entrevista se estructuró con base a indicadores de las variables medio natural SECTUR (2012) y sustentabilidad (comunalidad) desarrolladas por Velázquez-Sánchez y Solana (2013). Los resultados mostraron que todos ofrecen medio natural pero adolescen de programas de conservación. La media mostró desarrollo económico como principal interés. La decima parte manifestó categorias de comunalidad: Cultura propia, Adecuación, Cultura y Tecnología propia. Se observó mayor frecuencia de regreso de visitantes a comunidades con comunalidad en comparación con las otras con más desarrollo. Las comunidades que incluyen el medio natural y la comunidad, son las que reportan más frecuencia y más retorno de visitantes. El ecoturismo con la comunalidad puede ser un factor para el regreso de ecoturistas y desarrollo para la comunidad.Based on Martinez (2003) and the categories in Robles and Cardoso (2009) about the sustainability of indigenous communities this research analyzed the natural environment and sustainability services and eco-tourism activities in 80 indigenous communities in Mexico. Eighty exhibitors were interviewed in depth (phenomenology) during the first National Meeting of Indigenous Eco-Tourism 2012. The interview was structured based on indicators of environment variables SECTUR (2012) and sustainability (commonality) developed by Velázquez-Sánchez and Solana 2013. The results show that all exhibitors offered a natural environment but lack of conservation programs. The average showed economic development as their main interest. The tenth showed the commonality category: culture itself, adaptation, culture and local technology. A higher frequency of returning visitors are in communities with commonality compared to more developed communities. Communities that include the natural environment and community reported more frequency and return of visitors. The commonality, in eco-tourism, can be a factor in the return of eco-tourism and on the community development.

El uso de indicadores para determinar la sostenibilidad es una herramienta relativamente nueva y cargada de oportunidades de mejora. En este trabajo se realizó un análisis de 19 sistemas de indicadores de diferente naturaleza, analizando desde los que miden únicamente la conservación de las áreas protegidas, los que miden la actividad del turismo y los que miden el turismo en zonas de reserva. Una vez analizados los diferentes sistemas, se procedió a seleccionar aquellos que cumplían con las condiciones de ser compuestos por indicadores que comprendieran las dimensiones de sostenibilidad (ambiental, social, económica e institucional) y se construyó un modelo basado en el enfoque sistémico de desarrollo sostenible. Para validar el sistema de indicadores diseñado se consultó a la comunidad que tiene algún tipo de interés en esta clase de áreas o las utiliza como turista y a diferentes expertos en el tema. Para esta fase se seleccionó la técnica 3s propuesta por Cloquell (2003) y el método Delphi. Tras la aplicación de la metodología 3s-Delphi, fue necesario reformular 9 indicadores que no alcanzaron un promedio en la calificación otorgada por los consultados de mínimo 4 en una escala de 1 a 5 siendo 5 el máximo valor posible; estos indicadores fueron reformulados y puestos a validación nuevamente, con lo cual el resultado final fue un sistema construido con los aportes de expertos y personas interesadas, el cual se considera validado y de aplicación a cualquier área natural con uso turístico. The use of indicators to measure sustainability is a relatively new tool and loaded with opportunities for improvement. In this work, an analysis of 19 indicators systems of different nature, analyzing from which measure only the conservation of protected areas, which measure the activity of measuring tourism and tourism in reserve areas. Following analysis of the different systems, we proceeded to select those that met the criteria of being composed of indicators to understand the dimensions of sustainability (environmental, social, economic and institutional) and built a model based on the systems approach to sustainable development. To validate the designed system indicators were consulted community that has an interest in this kind of areas or used as a tourist and various experts. For this phase was selected technique proposed by Cloquell 3s (2003) and the Delphi method, after the application of the 3s-Delphi methodology was necessary to reformulate 9 indicators that averaged the rating given by respondents for at least 4 a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest possible value, these indicators were reformulated and made validation again, making the end result was a system built with input from experts and stakeholders, which is considered validated and application any natural area with tourist use.

Approximately 4.1 million people live in the three states of the Yucatán Peninsula: Quintana Roo, Yucatán, and Campeche. Some 30 municipalities are in a coastal territory of almost 2,000 linear kilometers, from the oil fields of the Gulf of Mexico to the world-renowned beaches of Cancún, just north of the second-largest barrier reef in the world. The peninsula's natural assets also include notable Mayan temples. With poverty far from eliminated, and with economic development opportunities beckoning in agriculture, manufacturing, and hydrocarbon development, the region is under growing risks from environmental hazards. Oil spills, hurricanes, coral bleaching, extreme flooding, and erosion have all been experienced in this region over the past decade. Based on preliminary identification of environmental priorities, Opportunities for Environmentally Healthy, Inclusive, and Resilient Growth in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula explores selected topics that aim to inform decision making in the region. A general context of integrated coastal zone management is used to explore issues, constraints, and potential solutions, and the role of geomorphology is examined with a view to identifying how shore management plans can contribute to improved coastal management. Economic studies find that the main environmental health risks in the peninsula result in more than 1,000 premature deaths every year and in more than 9.36 million days lost to illnesses. These risks generate substantial economic losses, representing 2.2†“3.3 percent of gross regional income. Scenarios relating to the economic cost of extreme weather events generate similar levels of damages: 1.4†“1.5 percent of GDP in 2020 and 1.6†“2.3 percent of GDP in 2050. A social accounting matrix examines the social and environmental interconnectedness to the various parts of the economy, and an institutional analysis considers the mandates of existing institutions in the states, and of the contribution that regulatory measures may make to environmentally sustainable development without undermining economic growth prospects.

The main activities of the economically active population around The Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl volcanoes region lie in the primary sector (65- 90%). Of the people working in this sector, those dependent on agricultural or pastoral activities generally have an income significantly lower than the minimum wage in Mexico. Of the activities in the area, these agricultural, pastoral, and forestry activities probably have the most direct effect on the ecology of the volcanoes and its immediate surroundings. Traditional farmers, producing crops such as beans, pumpkins and cucumbers, generally work on small fields using traditional methods and animal traction. Modern farming, geared towards intensive production develops on larger sites making use of modern machinery, fertilizers, and pesticides. As the area under agriculture continues to increase every year, the attendant opening of large forested areas, soil modification, and ensuing erosion make it almost impossible for forest recovery. Extensive forestry in the region mainly concerns cutting and collecting wood, cutting Pinus-branches for torches or for utensils for open-fire cooking, collection of mushrooms, and hunting. Although these (often clandestine) activities seem to be small-scale, their adverse effects on the forest have been substantial. Weekend visitors from Mexico City heavily dominate recreation, with tourism concentrated near the roads leading to and inside the park. Lacking organization and facilities, most recreational activities have had significant environmental impact on the area In many countries, the decline of nature has occurred because of changes in land use.
