Book Description
Excerpt from Indiana at the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg A circular issued on the 13th of April, 1913, by a commission created by an act of the Assembly of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, approved May 13, 1909, in which said commission styles itself the "Fiftieth Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg Commission," and which is made a part of this report, sets forth, in full, the plans of that commission for the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the great battle. It also contains the invitation of that commonwealth "to the Congress of the United States, and her Sister States and Commonwealths to share in this important anniversary and help make it an event worthy of its historical signifance, and an occasion creditable and impressive to our great and re-united Nation." It is needless to recite that the State of Indiana accepted the invitation, and, in every possible manner, endeavored to conform to the requirements of said circular. Our report sets forth Indiana's part, in the celebration of the anniversary, and, in the outset, we would emphasize the fact that the plans of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were fully carried out so far as they affected the State of Indiana. Our immediate contact with the Pennsylvania Commission, was through its efficient president. Colonel J. M. Schoonmaker, and its secretary, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis E. Beitler, and in the choice of such accomplished executives as these gentlemen, the commission as a body, indicated that it was composed throughout of very able executive talent. That commission, while reserving to itself, the supreme control of everything pertaining to the anniversary, wisely placed the preparation of the great camp for the entertainment of 50,000 men, and the superintendency of the quartermasters and commissary service in the hands of accomplished officers of the United States Army. In this selection the Pennsylvania Commission manifested its uniform wisdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Gettysburg: The Story of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Field Described as It Is on the Fiftieth Anniversary, 1863-1913 Early's Division had, in the meantime, crossed the South Mountain to Emmitsburg, and thence across country to York. Gordon's Brigade met the 26th Pennsylvania Regiment, which had been posted at Gettysburg when the news of Lee's invasion had been flashed north, near Marsh Creek, a few miles south of the town. This regiment, commanded by a colonel, who so far as is known, had not taken his baptism of fire from organized troops, like many another in the army, was dismayed at the enemy's approach. Some of the men fled; many were captured, but their guns had spoken loud enough to catch the ears of the enemy on the sur rounding territory.
