The British Museum's collection of South Indian paintings consists of around 1000 items ranging from the 17th to the 20th century and representing a wide variety of themes and techniques. Only a very few examples from this major collection have been published before. In this book the collection will be catalogued in full, and 250 of the most important items will be reproduced in colour. The paintings will be described and listed according to the their topics (Hindu mythology; castes, trades and occupations; natural history drawings; painted narratives; India observed) and according to the medium on which they were executed (paper, cloth, leather, mica). Each section will begin with a brief introduction outlining the essential stylistic and iconographic features. Among this material are a number of highly interesting albums such as a set of 91 paintings depicting Hindu mythology, dating from the early decades of the 19th century. More unusual items are the long painted scrolls from Andhra illustrating local mythological narratives, the painted cloths from Tamil Nadu depicting the Ramayana epic, and paintings on paper used by the storytellers of northern Karnataka.

By the mid-1970s, Andy Warhol was veering away from his earlier focus on mainstream celebrities and toward more eclectic subjects, such as the cross-dressers in his Ladies and Gentlemen series. In 1976, he made a series of paintings and drawings of the Native American actor and activist Russell Means. Starting with popular publicity shots, Warhol transferred these images to silkscreen and then printed them on canvases. Warhol presents Means with exaggerated, glamorized features; some of the canvases include hand-painted embellishments and decorations that distinguish this series from the mechanical approach of Warhol's earlier celebrity portraits. Danielle Porret’s passion for Asian art and for Indian painting in particular was inflamed when she attended classes on Asian mythology during her studies at Geneva University. It intensified further when in 1966 she visited an exhibition in London of Indian paintings collected by Mildred and William Archer, curators of Indian art at the British India office and the Victoria & Albert Museum respectively. A conference interpreter by profession, Porret began to study the collections of Asian art at London’s great museums and the technique of paper restoration. And she started to buy Indian paintings herself. Danielle Porret’s collection comprises outstanding works spanning seven centuries from the time of the Sultans (1206–1526) through to the nineteenth century. While many museums house representative art-historical inventories, Porret describes her collection as a “secret garden” compiled on the basis of her own personal taste. The new book A Secret Garden features 105 paintings from Porret’s collection. The essays are contributed by leading experts in the area of Indian painting: B.N. Goswamy (Pahari painting), Jeremiah P. Losty (the painting of Rajasthan and central India), and John Seyller (Mogul- und Dekkan painting, as well as the painting from the time of the Sultans). The book is published to coincide with an exhibition at the Museum Rietberg in Zürich in spring 2014.
