"To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi." William Faulkner. My whole life has been comprised of searching for my sense of place, my personal heritage and culture. That search has taken me all over this country and half way around the world only to come back home to the hill country of north Mississippi. I have always found beauty, comfort, and peacefulness in the unpredictable, sometimes wild landscape of this place; it is part of my identity and provides a history of where I have been and where and who I am. The resulting images are a spontaneous intuitive discovery or rediscovery of a constructed visual idea communicating a relationship between change and continuity. My work is the essence of changing properties that relate to the passage of time, erosion, and changing of the seasons. There is an obvious tension between rest and movement, past and present. The translucent qualities of some layers reveal aspects of the print's history or its beginnings. At other times, the past is hidden and covered up. There is a focus on process and composition, allowing the process an active role and voice. My prints are a visual expression of my sense of place laced with personal experiences.
