Book Description
Fridtjof Nansen's 'In Northern Mists' is a seminal work that delves into the history, culture, and geography of the Arctic regions. Written in a descriptive and immersive style, Nansen paints a vivid picture of the harsh landscapes and the resilient people who call the far North their home. His detailed accounts of expeditions and encounters with indigenous populations provide valuable insights into a little-explored area of the world. The book is a blend of travelogue, ethnography, and historical analysis, making it a valuable resource for those interested in Arctic studies. Nansen's literary craftsmanship and attention to detail set this work apart from other travel narratives of his time. His ability to weave together personal experiences with broader themes of exploration and discovery make 'In Northern Mists' a captivating read for anyone curious about the Arctic. Nansen's own experiences as an explorer and scientist undoubtedly influenced the writing of this book, adding a layer of authenticity and authority to his observations. Overall, 'In Northern Mists' is a must-read for those looking to deepen their understanding of the Arctic and its inhabitants.

Book Description
From Nansen's Introduction This book owes its existence in the first instance to a rash promise made some years ago to my friend Dr. J. Scott Keltie, of London, that I would try, when time permitted, to contribute a volume on the history of arctic voyages to his series of books on geographical exploration. The subject was an attractive one; I thought I was fairly familiar with it, and did not expect the book to take a very long time when once I made a start with it. On account of other studies it was a long while before I could do this; but when at last I seriously took the work in hand, the subject in return monopolised my whole powers. It appeared to me that the natural foundation for a history of arctic voyages was in the first place to make clear the main features in the development of knowledge of the North in early times. By tracing how ideas of the Northern World, appearing first in a dim twilight, change from age to age, how the old myths and creations of the imagination are constantly recurring, sometimes in new shapes, and how new ones are added to them, we have a curious insight into the working of the human mind in its endeavour to subject to itself the world and the universe. A word from this editor: This book can hardly compare to getting the original hardback which by now is a rare book - the wealth of maps and illustrations Nansen placed in his 2 volume work covers a breath of history and makes for a wonderful printed work of timeless value - the poor substitutes we have placed here attempt to touch on this but if you can find the original you should get it.

Book Description
"An absorbing portrait of the Arthurian age." —San Francisco Chronicle Among the first to look at the story of Camelot through Guinevere's eyes, Woolley sets the traditional tale in the time of its origin, after Britain has shattered into warring fiefdoms. Hampered by neither fantasy nor medieval romance, this young Guinevere is a feisty Celtic tomboy who sees no reason why she must learn to speak Latin, wear dresses, and go south to marry that king. But legends being what they are, the story of Arthur's rise to power soon intrigues her, and when they finally meet, Guinevere and Arthur form a partnership that has lasted for 1500 years. This is Arthurian epic at its best—filled with romance, adventure, authentic Dark Ages detail, and wonderfully human people. Praise for Persia Woolley's Guinevere Trilogy "Original...accurate in detail...Child of the Northern Spring is rich and sweet." —New York Times "Vivid...dramatic...once again we are captivated by the magic of the legend that has long fed our appetite for pageantry and romantic adventure." —Washington Post "Vividly re-creates sixth-century Britain in the throes of change...Child of the Northern Spring portrays a sensitive young woman who will appeal to modern readers." —Publishers Weekly "Richly textured, evoking the sights and sounds of castle and countryside, the qualities of knight and servant. Highly recommended." —Library Journal

Book Description
"...considerably more wit and pizazz than the legendary Georgette [Heyer] herself.” —Kirkus Reviews The eligible but aloof Lord Marchmont seems as determined to remain single as his sister, Lady Emilia, is to see him wed. They are surrounded by a glimmering cast of characters, from the unreliable but dashing rake Jeffery de Guere to the lovely and shy Miss Amy Lewis. And, of course, the Stanbroke girls: Lady Isabella, romantic and dreamy, yet surprisingly practical, and Lady Elizabeth, her older sister, a heroine of great sense and wit as well as beauty. As these characters dance, court, conspire, love, and chase their way through some of the most fashionable spots of England and the continent, we join their elegant circle for the sparkling, sophisticated romp. As always, Fiona Hill brings a fresh and engaging liveliness to the world of Regency manners, making The Stanbroke Girls a triumphant delight to read.
