Book Description
“What did you do in the war, Grandpa?” asked my eleven-year-old great-granddaughter one evening. In the time it took her to ask that one innocent question, my thoughts slipped back more than seventy years to the summer and fall of 1943 and to the airfields of East Anglia and into the death-laden skies over Nazi-occupied Europe. The Eighth Air Force’s rule was simple: “Complete twenty-five bombing missions, and you can go home.” The problem was, the odds of completing those twenty-five missions was almost nil. In our B-17 Flying Fortress, my friends and I had to fight off Germany’s finest fighter pilots in their Messerschmitt’s and Focke-Wulf’s and fly through flak barrages so thick it looked, felt, and sounded like we were caught in the middle of a Texas tornado. We risked asphyxiation in the thin air at altitudes of twenty-five thousand feet or higher and endured temperatures so low that without the forty pounds of protective clothing covering us from head to toe, including electrically heated bunny suits, we would have frozen to death in a matter of minutes. That one simple question convinced me that it was time that my family learned what I had done and the price my friends and I had paid during our war against fascism and tyranny, a topic that I had never really spoken about before.

Book Description
A work of fiction drawn from true events, When the Sky Was No Longer Blue is a shattering account of three generations' response to one of humanity’s most devastating crimes, a tale of unspeakable terror that culminates in a universal message and an important call for prevention. The past bleeds into the present for Jeet, a survivor of a brutal genocide who, decades later, is still tormented by it regularly. It is a past from which injustice still bellows, a past in which human rights and humanity were deeply buried, a past more terrible than most of us could contemplate. Through her enduring nightmares and memories, we embark on a journey of survival with Jeet, who is now a grandmother spending the summer with her beloved grandchildren, Rinny and Raj. Over its course, the teenagers come face to face with their grandmother’s truth and the family history she’s kept hidden from them. Jeet decides to share her experience only after much tortured contemplation, shedding her long-held conviction that shielding future generations from the cruelty was best. With this choice, Jeet reconciles with her past, and Rinny and Raj help her to heal. Along the way, they delve into the topic of genocides and preventing mass atrocities against humanity.

Book Description
Music in the Post-9/11 World addresses the varied and complex roles music has played in the wake of September 11, 2001. Interdisciplinary in approach, international in scope, and critical in orientation, the twelve essays in this groundbreaking volume examine a diverse array of musical responses to the terrorist attacks of that day, and reflect upon the altered social, economic, and political environment of "post-9/11" music production and consumption. Individual essays are devoted to the mass-mediated works of popular musicians such as Bruce Springsteen and Darryl Worley, as well as to lesser-known musical responses by artists in countries including Afghanistan, Egypt, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, and Senegal. Contributors also discuss a range of themes including the role played by Western classical music in rites of mourning and commemoration, "invisible" musical practices such as the creation of television news music, and implicit censorship in the mainstream media. Taken as a whole, this collection presents powerful evidence of the central role music has played in expressing, shaping, and contesting worldwide public attitudes toward the defining event of the early twenty-first century.

Book Description
Writing a War of Words is the first exploration of the war-time quest by Andrew Clark - a writer, historian, and volunteer on the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary - to document changes in the English language from the start of the First World War up to 1919. Clark's unique series of lexical scrapbooks, replete with clippings, annotations, and real-time definitions, reveals a desire to put living language history to the fore, and to create a record of often fleeting popular use. The rise of trench warfare, the Zeppelinophobia of total war, and descriptions of shellshock (and raid shock on the Home Front) all drew his attentive gaze. The archive includes examples from a range of sources, such as advertising, newspapers, and letters from the Front, as well as documenting social issues such as the shifting forms of representation as women 'did their bit' on the Home Front. Lynda's Mugglestone's fascinating investigation of this valuable archive reassesses the conventional accounts of language history during this period, recuperates Clark himself as another 'forgotten lexicographer', challenges the received wisdom on the inexpressibilities of war, and examines the role of language as an interdisciplinary lens on history.

Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge.
