Book Description
Parents play a critical role in their children's development and learning. It reviews parenting and home-visiting programs in general, and then focuses on the evidence for programs aimed at Indigenous families. It outlines what works, what doesn't, and what further research is needed. This resource sheet also discusses the promising practices and recommendations of the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care.

Book Description
Though there is international evidence supporting the positive effects of early childhood education and care (ECEC), there is less research on its benefits for Indigenous children in Australia. This paper addresses this gap with data from the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC) on the short and longer term impacts of ECEC on cognitive and developmental outcomes. It finds that effects of ECEC participation varied significantly across the three groups of outcomes analysed (reading and literacy, maths and abstract reasoning, and developmental) and between the two formal venues of ECEC provision (preschool and child care). Nonetheless, the overall findings support the benefits of participation and justify policies that aim to improve ECEC access for Indigenous children.

Book Description
This paper reviews what policies, programs, and interventions can help address adverse conditions in childhood for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and inter-generational disadvantage, which have an impact not only in childhood but in later life. Sections include: The context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander childhood development; improving pregnancy and birth outcomes; integrated early childhood services; supporting parenting and family life; ensuring optimal nutrition and growth; strengthening early childhood development and the transition to school; and keeping children safe - reducing child abuse and neglect. The paper also presents recommendations to government on improving health and wellbeing in the early years, arguing that a much greater proportion of the national expenditure on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, education and human services must be invested in evidence-based measures for the early years.

Book Description
This book challenges and offers an alternative to the imposition of best practices on communities by outside specialists. It tells of an unexpected partnership initiated by an Aboriginal tribal council with the University of Victoria's School of Child and Youth Care. The partnership produced a new approach to professional education, in which community leaders are co-constructors of the curriculum. Word of this "generative curriculum" has spread and now over sixty communities have participated in the First Nations Partnerships Program. The authors show how this innovative program has strengthened community capacity to design, deliver, and evaluate culturally appropriate programs to support young children's development.

Book Description
Learning and Teaching in the Early Years provides a comprehensive, contemporary and practical introduction to early childhood teaching in Australia. A strong focus on the links between theory, policy and practice firmly aligns this text with the Early Years Learning Framework. Written for students of early childhood programs, this book covers learning and development, as well as professional practice in teaching children from birth to eight years. In recognition of the evolving role of educators, topic areas include learning, teaching, working with families, leading, advocating and researching. Each chapter contains learning objectives, key terms and reflection points. Detailed case studies document the intersection between research, policy and practice, enhancing pre-service and practicing educators' appreciation of how a policy-aligned approach reinforces learning and development in the early years. This text draws on the latest research to present children's learning as a dynamic and active process requiring specific, intentional teaching behaviours.
