Supporting Indigenous Students to Succeed at University
Author: Martin Nakata
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 100078858X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
Addressing a significant gap in the literature, this book provides conceptual and practical foundations for the development of more effective support strategies to improve academic outcomes for Indigenous higher education students. Authors Martin and Vicky Nakata draw on Indigenous and higher education research, as well as their own experience implementing reforms to Indigenous student support services in Australian universities, to present a method that focuses on helping students to develop the skills and capabilities they need to thrive at university. The book is divided into three sections, the first outlining fifteen key concepts and conditions for student success. The second section provides detailed guidance on individual student case management, from foundational concepts through to implementation. The third section outlines what staff need to consider before attempting to implement changes to practice in their local context, offering a blueprint for assessing current practice, planning for and then implementing change. Presenting an approach that has proven successful in closing the gap between the academic outcomes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, this book is an essential resource for academic and non-academic staff who support underprepared students to succeed in higher education.

Building the Evidence to Improve Completion Rates for Indigenous Students

Book Description
This research project has focused on success factors for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university completion rates. While the number of Indigenous students participating in higher education continues to grow, Indigenous student completion rates remain very low relative to non-Indigenous students. The national data indicates that, while Indigenous students typically can take longer to graduate, the nine-year completion rates for Indigenous students remain around 47 per cent, significantly below the 74 per cent for non-Indigenous students (Universities Australia, 2020, p. 24). Some universities have higher Indigenous student completion rates than the national average. However, research-based evidence of these universities as "success models" is limited. The project involved a mixed-methods approach to identify and analyse the multifaceted dimensions and range of strategies used at four Go8 and one non-Go8 university to support Indigenous student completions. The five universities were chosen because of their high completion rates compared to the national average. Through collaboration with an expert Indigenous reference group and staff at universities, the project involved documenting evidence to demonstrate success factors that support Indigenous student completions at these five universities and to highlight areas to strengthen Indigenous student completion rates at universities more generally. Activity Theory, Authentic Learning and Emerging Technologies
Author: Vivienne Bozalek
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317676556
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
Although emerging technologies are becoming popularised for teaching, learning and research, the relationship between their use and transformative effects on higher education remain largely unexplored. This edited collection seeks to fill this gap by providing a nuanced view, locating higher education pedagogical practices at an intersection of emerging technologies, authentic learning and activity systems. Providing numerous case studies as examples, the book draws from a wide range of contexts to illustrate how such a convergence has the potential to track transformative teaching and learning practices in the higher education sector. Chapters provide the reader with a variety of transformative higher education pedagogical practices in southern contexts, theorised within the framework of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) and tool mediation, while using authentic learning as a pedagogical model upon which this theoretical framework is based. The topics covered in the book have global relevance, with research paying particular attention to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, where the authors are based. The book will be of interest to educators, researchers and practitioners in higher education, as well as those interested in emerging technologies in education more generally.

Strategies for Facilitating Success of Aboriginal Students
Author: James Alan Oloo
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Education, Higher
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Educational outcomes for Aboriginal students in Canada is a cause for considerable concern. High dropout rates, low completion and success, as well as personal and academic difficulties at educational institutions have challenged educators for decades. Solutions have included lowering admission requirements for Aboriginal candidates and establishing alternative programs that improve attendance and remedy learning problems. However, most of these policies have not offered a lasting solution to challenges facing Aboriginal students. This study presents findings from interviews conducted with 20 Aboriginal students, four professors, and two non-academic staff at Simon Fraser University. It presents their perceptions of student success and how this has been facilitated by the university. The study argues that positive student-teacher relationship, teacher's understanding of Aboriginal students' way of life, and including Aboriginal content in the curriculum are likely to enhance the successful completion of programs for Aboriginal students.

Indigenous Pathways, Transitions and Participation in Higher Education
Author: Jack Frawley
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811040621
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book brings together contributions by researchers, scholars, policy-makers, practitioners, professionals and citizens who have an interest in or experience of Indigenous pathways and transitions into higher education. University is not for everyone, but a university should be for everyone. To a certain extent, the choice not to participate in higher education should be respected given that there are other avenues and reasons to participate in education and employment that are culturally, socially and/or economically important for society. Those who choose to pursue higher education should do so knowing that there are multiple pathways into higher education and, once there, appropriate support is provided for a successful transition. The book outlines the issues of social inclusion and equity in higher education, and the contributions draw on real-world experiences to reflect the different approaches and strategies currently being adopted. Focusing on research, program design, program evaluation, policy initiatives and experiential narrative accounts, the book critically discusses issues concerning widening participation.
