Book Description
Excerpt from The Official Standards of the United States for the Grading, Sampling, and Analyzing of Cottonseed Sold or Offered for Sale for Crushing Purposes: Effective, June, 1932 Various efforts to find a method for satisfactory appraising and evaluating the content of cottonseed marketed for crushing purposes have been more or less continuous since cottonseed began to be important, but the variation both of quantity and condition of the constituents had presented obstacles to this attainment. In 1925 the Bureau of Agricultural Economics undertook, in response to requests from substantial factors in the industry and pursuant to its legal authority, to develop such a grading system. 'through its Division of Cotton Marketing, studies of the nature and uses of cottonseed and of the grading requirements of the industry were made and a grading system based upon the chemical composition of seed was devised. Excerpt from Factors Affecting Cottonseed Damage in Harvesting and Handling After the seed and weight were placed in position, the jack was lowered at a constant rate of inch per minute until the jack broke supporting contact with the beam. At this instant the maximum force was applied to the seed, signaled by a light bulb. The deforma tion of the seed was read on the displacement dial. The cottonseed used in the test was Stone ville 213 variety produced at the Mississippi Agricultural Experiment Station, State College, Miss. The cotton was hand ginned to minimize damage to the seed. Sizes of seed used in the tests ranged from to inch in diam eter. Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of the recent developments in cotton production and processing, including a number of genetic approaches, such as GM cotton for pest resistance, which have been hotly debated in recent decades. In the era of climate change, cotton is facing diverse abiotic stresses such as salinity, drought, toxic metals and environmental pollutants. As such, scientists are developing stress-tolerant cultivars using agronomic, genetic and molecular approaches. Gathering papers on these developments, this timely book is a valuable resource for a wide audience, including plant scientists, agronomists, soil scientists, botanists, environmental scientists and extention workers.
