"Tin-glazed earthenware has been made in Europe since the 15th century. In Britain, floor tiles and drug pots were made in Aldgate, London in the 16th century by immigrant potters from the Low Countries. In the early 17th century, factories making dishes and other wares were set up in London close to the River Thames. Their products were initially much influenced by Chinese porcelain as well as by Italian maiolica. Manufacture spread from London to centres such as Bristol, Liverpool and Dublin. In the course of its two hundred years history, from c.1570 to the 1770s when creamware came into fashion, English delftware played an increasingly important part in the everyday life of a mainly middle class clientele. By its nature bright and colourful, it was also extremely versatile, adapting itself to the practical needs of the household and, in its decoration, responding to the fashions of the time. Above all it lent itself admirably to the demand for personalised pieces of all kinds. It is these qualities which have made it so attractive to collectors, especially in recent years. English Delftware illustrates fifty-one examples, the majority from the important collection formed by Robert and Jean Warren but with a selection of pieces, mainly unpublished, from other benefactions, together with purchases and objects excavated in Oxford.
