Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive assessment and presentation of various feasible application of electric propulsion system, considering their weight, volume, reliability, and fault tolerance. The results of feasibility analysis can be used today or in the near future for development of electric propulsion system for the ships, planes, helicopters, and spacecrafts. To solve the above task, new theoretical approaches are applied, including combined random process methods, the Lz-transform technique for multistate systems, and statistical data processing.

Book Description
This book presents an analytical review of the world’s construction of icebreakers, detailing the prospects of navigation along the North Sea Route. It provides the results of engineering and cost efficiency feasibility studies (ECSs) for arctic icebreakers and ice-going new generation transport ships forming part of the Russian merchant fleet. The book considers theoretical and experimental studies of ice performance of domestic icebreakers, provides the results of research into the design and construction of ice navigation transport ships, and discusses aspects of safe navigation in ice conditions.

Book Description
Icebreakers impose limitations on a propulsion system that have been solved historically by the use of a D.C. motor directly coupled to the shaft driving the propeller. With the advent of high power silicon rectifier devices, several members of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation published papers which suggest the use of these rectifiers in an alternating current (A.C.) to direct current (D.C.) electric propulsion system for icebreakers. It was suggested that the use of this conversion type propulsion system would provide an icebreaker with the proven and inherent advantages of a D.C. motor and would provide weight, cost, efficiency, reliability and maintenance advantages due to the use of A.C. generating equipment. The purpose of this work is to examine proposed A.C. to D.C. propulsion systems using silicon rectifier conversion equipment with the following objectives: Discussion of the A.C. - D.C. propulsion system with senior industry personnel with the intent of determining that the propulsion system can be manufactured with current technology and that a development program will not be necessary. Determination that the performance of an icebreaker using an A.C. to D.C. propulsion system would be at least comparable to that in currently operating U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers. Determination of the advantages and disadvantages of the A.C. - D.C. propulsion system when compared to a D.C. propulsion system. Determination that there are no known considerations which make silicon rectifier units unsuitable for use in a marine environment or in an icebreaker propulsion system.

Book Description
The only book that covers fundamental shipboard design and verification concepts from individual devices to the system level Shipboard electrical system design and development requirements are fundamentally different from utility-based power generation and distribution requirements. Electrical engineers who are engaged in shipbuilding must understand various design elements to build both safe and energy-efficient power distribution systems. This book covers all the relevant technologies and regulations for building shipboard power systems, which include commercial ships, naval ships, offshore floating platforms, and offshore support vessels. In recent years, offshore floating platforms have been frequently discussed in exploring deep-water resources such as oil, gas, and wind energy. This book presents step-by-step shipboard electrical system design and verification fundamentals and provides information on individual electrical devices and practical design examples, along with ample illustrations to back them. In addition, Shipboard Power Systems Design and Verification Fundamentals: Presents real-world examples and supporting drawings for shipboard electrical system design Includes comprehensive coverage of domestic and international rules and regulations (e.g. IEEE 45, IEEE 1580) Covers advanced devices such as VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) in detail This book is an important read for all electrical system engineers working for shipbuilders and shipbuilding subcontractors, as well as for power engineers in general.

Book Description
Phase I of the Icebreaker Propulsion Systems Feasibility Study evaluates the relative economic merits of nuclear and conventional propulsion plants for a range of ship horsepowers and for a specific operations mission. This volume describes the results of this evaluation as it pertains to the conventional oil-fired prime mover systems and the power conversion or transmission systems. To obtain a definitive economic comparison of candidate propulsion plants on a consistent basis, it was necessary to perform the following major tasks: Define the design and performance requirements of icebreaker propulsion systems and derive preliminary design criteria; Define economic parameters and bases for cost analysis of capital, fuel, manning, and maintenance costs; Develop a reference design of each type propulsion system capable of meeting the performance and safety requirements and which would have economic merit; Perform comparative economic analyses of the reference propulsion plant designs.
