This fascinating exploration contributes to the ‘performative turn’ in early modern studies by reframing Jonson’s classicism as essential to his dramaturgy as well as his erudition. The book is also a case study for how the early modern education system’s emphasis on imitative-contaminative practices prepared its students, many of whom became professional playwrights, for writing for a theatre that had a similar emphasis on recycling and recombining performative tropes and structures.

Excerpt from Influence of Ben Jonson, on English Comedy 1598-1642 This study of Ben Jonson's influence on Elizabethan and Restoration comedy has been made at the suggestion of Professor Felix E. Schelling, and has been done in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. Much suggestion and direction have been gained from Ward's History of English Dramatic Literature, Schelling's Elizabethan Drama, and Woodbridge's Studies in Jonson's Comedy. The method pursued has consisted for the most part of a first-hand examination and comparison of the plays written by Jonson, bis contemporaries and later followers. The question of how far and in what way one man's work has been influenced by that of another is always open to dispute, and it is impossible to fix absolute limits. The ever-present danger is that of finding what one is looking for rather than what actually exists. Many quotations have been included, especially from minor writers, so as to put before the reader as far as possible the materials upon which judgment has been based. This book explores historical, socio-political, and metatheatrical readings of a whole host of dying bodies and risen corpses, each part of a long tradition of living death on stage. Just as zombies, ghouls, and the undead in modern media often stand in for present-day concerns, early modern writers frequently imagined living death in complex ways that allowed them to address contemporary anxieties. These include fresh bleeding bodies (and body parts), ghostly Lord Mayors, and dying characters who must carefully choose their last words – or have those words chosen for them by the living. As well as offering fresh interpretations of well-known plays such as Middleton’s The Lady’s Tragedy and Webster’s The White Devil, this innovative study also sheds light on less well-known works such as the anonymous The Tragedy of Locrine, Marston’s Antonio’s Revenge, and Munday’s mayoral pageants Chruso-thriambos and Chrysanaleia. The author demonstrates that wherever characters in early modern drama appear to straddle the line between this world and the next, it is rarely a simple matter of life and death.
