Book Description
This book demonstrates the originality and coherence of Jonathan Edwards' philosophical theology using his dynamic reconception of reality as the interpretive key. The author argues that what underlies Edwards' writings is a radical shift from the traditional Western metaphysics of substance and form to a new conception of the world as a network of dispositions: active and abiding principles that possess reality apart from their manifestations in actions and events. Edwards' dispositional ontology enables him to restate the Augustinian-Calvinist tradition in theology in a strikingly modern philosophical framework. A prime example of Edwards' innovative reconstruction in philosophical theology is his conception of God as both eternal actuality and a disposition to repeat that actuality within God and also through creation. This view is a compelling alternative to the traditional Western doctrine of God as changeless actuality, on the one hand, and the recent process theologians' excessive stress on God's involvement in change, on the other. Edwards' achievement was that he saw dynamic movement as essential to God's own life without compromising the traditional Christian tenets of God's prior actuality and transcendence. The author of this volume also explicates the way in which Edwards' dynamic reconception of reality informs his theories of imagination, aesthetic perception, the knowledge of God, and the meaning of history. This expanded edition includes a new preface and a new appendix titled "Jonathan Edwards on Nature."

People don't abandon faith because they have doubts. People abandon faith because they think they're not allowed to have doubts. Even as a pastor, Austin Fischer has experienced the shadows of doubt and disillusionment. Leaning into perennial questions about Christianity, he shows that doubt is no reason to leave the faith—instead, it's an invitation to a more honest faith.

Book Description
We had to do it. We had to reprint this book. Rarely has a book had such an impact on so many of us here at Ignatius Press. It is one of the most powerful and moving books we have come across. If you can only buy one book this season, this must be the one. Here is the astonishing true story of the harrowing experiences of a young German seminarian drafted into Hitler's dreaded SS at the onset of World War II. Without betraying his Christian ideals, against all odds, and in the face of Evil, Gereon Goldmann was able to complete his priestly training, be ordained, and secretly minister to German Catholic soldiers and innocent civilian victims caught up in the horrors of war. How it all came to pass will astound you. Father Goldmann tells of his own incredible experiences of the trials of war, his many escapes from almost certain death, and the diabolical persecution that he and his fellow Catholic soldiers encountered on account of their faith. What emerges is an extraordinary witness to the workings of Divine Providence and the undying power of love, prayer, faith, and sacrifice. Illustrated

Book Description
God-Haunted World is a provocative presentation of a neglected part of Jonathan Edwards's theology. In a world in which for all practical purposes Christians often see nature the same way their secular neighbors do-as a machine operating according to impersonal mechanical laws-Edwards's worldview is relevant and timely. The universe has not only been created by God; it is literally kept by the power of God every nanosecond and it scintillates with revelation and insight for those who have eyes to see. Edwards's world is a place where there is no mute fact-everything, from insects to elephants, from molecules to mountains, has a story to tell. Moreover, if God were to withdraw his sustaining power, all of created reality would collapse into nothingness-every second is a divine dance between creation and nothingness-and the present world is an incredible tribute to God's faithfulness or in the words of the refrain of Psalm 136: his unfailing love. Drawing on the resources of Scripture, Church history, Edwards's writings, and other creative Evangelical theologians, God-Haunted World makes a compelling case for a renewed appreciation of our natural world. God-Haunted World is a visual exploration of the nexus between Scripture and Nature in the theology of Jonathan Edwards. Methods of data visualization and associative thinking have been used to illustrate the vast network of Edwards's emblematic thought.

Book Description
The book of Revelation is one of the most studied works in the New Testament, and often has a tendency to be borrowed by fanatics and poor theologians to create a science-fiction type of “end times theology.” Edwards in no way encompasses that line of thinking. Instead, he draws six texts from Revelation, four to teach the plight of the wicked in hell, and two to teach the strengthening and bliss of the saints in heaven. His sermons and texts are as follows: Ripe for Damnation, from Revelation 14:18-19 on God’s vintage winepress of wrath against the wicked. The Dangers of Decline, from Revelation 2:4-5 concerning the saint’s leaving their first love of Christ. Cold Nor Hot, from Revelation 3:15 concerning the manner in which wicked men profess to be Christian but live like the heathen. Approaching the End of God’s Grand Design, from Revelation 21:6 concerning the end of God’s plan to glorify himself in the wicked and the just. Serving God in Heaven, from Revelation 22:3 concerning the saint’s enjoyment of serving Christ for eternity. And, lastly, The Lamb’s Book of Life, from Revelation 6:15-16 concerning the wicked who desire the rocks and mountains to fall on them when they appear before the wrath of the Lamb, Jesus Christ. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book Description
It seems that the wish to benefit all, and to lavish indiscriminately upon the first comer one’s own gifts, was not a thing altogether commendable, or even free from reproach in the eyes of the many; seeing that the gratuitous waste of many prepared drugs on the incurably-diseased produces no result worth caring about, either in the way of gain to the recipient, or reputation to the would-be benefactor. Rather such an attempt becomes in many cases the occasion of a change for the worse. The hopelessly-diseased and now dying patient receives only a speedier end from the more active medicines; the fierce unreasonable temper is only made worse by the kindness of the lavished pearls, as the Gospel tells us. I think it best, therefore, in accordance with the Divine command, for any one to separate the valuable from the worthless when either have to be given away, and to avoid the pain which a generous giver must receive from one who treads upon his pearl,’ and insults him by his utter want of feeling for its beauty.
