The sumptuous paintings of Stefan Lochner (d. Cologne 1451) are among the most familiar yet least understood images of the late Middle Ages. His depictions of the Virgin and Child have entered the popular imagination as models of sweetness and grace, values superficially attached to them since their rediscovery two hundred years ago. Appreciation of Lochner's achievements has also been impeded by criticism that artificially judges him in terms of perceived realism. Both attitudes have blinded us to Lochner's creativity and invention.This book explores Lochner's oeuvre from various vantage points. Tracing current conceptions of the artist back to the earliest recorded testimonies, it first reviews Lochner's changing critical fortunes. A perceptual account of Lochner's major paintings and illuminated manuscripts follows, clarifying the artist's passion for the nature of representation and the different ways in which he engages the viewer. In addition, study of Lochner's works by means of infrared reflectography reveals a draftsman of the first order: his complex underdrawings foreshadow Martin Schongauer's graphic style of forty years later. Lochner's atelier and the different forms of collaboration that took place within it are the focus of a separate chapter. The book then identifies criteria in his images that contemporaries would have valued, such as his enduring engagement with the goldsmith's art, which typifies the manner in which his technical versatility enhanced the sensorial and emotive appeal of his images. The earliest Buddhist art of Sanchi and Bharhut is aniconic : The Buddha is represented in symbols only. In the later Buddhist art of Gandhara and Mathura, the Buddha is represented in human form: he is the principal subject of sculptural art. The book seeks to explore the geographical area in which the image of the Buddha first emerged and whether the Buddhist doctrines-Hinayana or Mahayana-had anything to do with this transformation. The Buddha image, as developed eventually at Sarnath, became the model for the Buddha images in whole of Asia, south-east, central and eastern Asia. The iconographic features of the Buddha image are superficially an aberration, being in apparent conflict with the doctrine. The Buddha had cut off his hair at the time of his renunciation; the rules of the order enjoin that a monk must be tonsured and must discard and eschew all riches. However, in his images, the Buddha has hair on his head; later he is also endowed with a crown and jewels. After an exhaustive examination of the views of various scholars, the book answers these questions and resolves the controversies on the basis of literary, numismatic and epigraphic sources. More importantly it makes use of the valuable evidence from the contemporaneous Jaina art : Aniconism of early Jaina art and the iconographic features of Jaina images. The implications of this study are also important : Does India owe idolatry to Buddhism? Was this of foreign inspiration? Was the Buddha image fashioned after the Vedic Brahma and whether the Buddha's usnisa and Buddhist art motifs are rooted in the Vedic tradition? Human beings have always made images, and to do so they have developed and refined an enormous range of artistic tools and materials. With the development of digital technology, the ways of making images - whether they are still or moving, 2D or 3D - have evolved at an unprecedented rate. At every stage of image making, artists now face a choice between using analog and using digital tools. Yet a digital image need not look digital; and likewise, a hand-made image or traditional photograph need not look analog. If we do not see the artist's choice between the analog and the digital, what difference can this choice make for our appreciation of images in the digital age? Image in the Making answers this question by accounting for the fundamental distinction between the analog and the digital; by explicating the technological realization of this distinction in image-making practice; and by exploring the creative possibilities that are distinctive of the digital.
