Book Description
Substation Automation Systems: Design and Implementation aims to close the gap created by fast changing technologies impacting on a series of legacy principles related to how substation secondary systems are conceived and implemented. It is intended to help those who have to define and implement SAS, whilst also conforming to the current industry best practice standards. Key features: Project-oriented approach to all practical aspects of SAS design and project development. Uniquely focusses on the rapidly changing control aspect of substation design, using novel communication technologies and IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices). Covers the complete chain of SAS components and related equipment instead of purely concentrating on intelligent electronic devices and communication networks. Discusses control and monitoring facilities for auxiliary power systems. Contributes significantly to the understanding of the standard IEC 61850, which is viewed as a “black box” for a significant number of professionals around the world. Explains standard IEC 61850 – Communication networks and systems for power utility automation – to support all new systems networked to perform control, monitoring, automation, metering and protection functions. Written for practical application, this book is a valuable resource for professionals operating within different SAS project stages including the: specification process; contracting process; design and engineering process; integration process; testing process and the operation and maintenance process.

Book Description
This comprehensive overview of 61850 standard/protocol focuses on implementation, taking the reader through the development and concepts of IEC 61850. This includes the initial work by General Motors (Manufacturing Automation Protocol), EPRI (UCA 1.0 and UCA 2.0), IEEE (TR 1550), and IEC 61850. The standard is a significant piece of many IIoT (industrial internet of things) strategies for substation communication. The book discusses and documents the basic research and theory of guaranteed multicast done for IEC 61850 GOOSE as well as the shift from variable technology to object oriented technology. The layering principles, as well as the structure, of IEC 61850 are discussed in detail as well as the actual communication profiles that have been created to support substation/distribution automation, distributed energy resources, and synchrophasors. Real applications will be discussed as well as the future direction of the standard. The author is a technical co-editor of IEC 61850 standard and a leader in US implementations, having been involved with the technology from its inception.

Book Description
Recent years, power systems are experiencing a huge revolution, the smart grids which earn the popularity are considered as the new generation of power systems. Therefore, as the most significant part of power systems -substation automation systems also have new requirements to be fulfilled. IEC 61850 is a progressive, comprehensive and promising substation automation standard which offers object-oriented data model for substation automation system, interoperability among intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) from different vectors. In IEC 61850, Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) message which provides communication services model and specific methods of implementation to meet the requirements of realtime communication. IEC 61499 Function Blocks is a software component model which designs for distributed, embedded and control system. It provides the platform of designing distributed applications based on substation automation system. The aim of Function Blocks is to develop the component-based tools for the new generation of automation system and achieve multi-platform on the development of automation substation applications. The integration of IEC 61850 GOOSE message and IEC 61499 function blocks would realize the interoperability between different manufacturers and achieve the high requirement of development of substation automation system on data communication. This thesis presents how IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging realizes communication between the software components of IEC 61499 function blocks based on publisher/subscriber model. In this thesis, GOOSE control block model and mechanism of GOOSE message will be explained and analysed first. Then the abstract communication service and specific communication service mapping will be introduced for the implementation of GOOSE message with function blocks. WinPcap is utilized to provide application programming interface (API) for GOOSE publisher and subscriber to build GOOSE message communication between function blocks. Simulation and tests demonstrate the GOOSE publisher and subscriber function blocks communicate GOOSE message in diverse scenarios.
