Despite starting slowly with some academic jargon about altruism and people's motivations to donate organs, the book quickly takes a right turn and gets interesting. The authors sprinkle little informative tidbits along the way-Asian-Americans constituted only 3.4% of U.S. donors-and bring their points alive through little vignettes when examining the origins of altruism. The authors would make brilliant sales reps: they put forth a convincing argument about what a great humanitarian effort living donation is then patiently explain the evaluation process to reassure readers of the minimal costs. The few downsides are reviewed and discussed-for example, how to deal with family members who do not support the decision to donate or the devastation donors might experience when a recipient dies. Resources, bibliography, and index occupy a full 36 pages, yet for the most part this book escapes the drudgery of a research-laden study and instead reads as a fascinating story about a very human issue. Organ transplantation as one of the most effective treatment options for patients with organ failure is challenged by organ shortage around the world. This systematic review aims to summary relevant factors influencing people's intention and behavior for organ donation. Method. Three databases, namely PUB med, Medline and China knowledge resources integrated database, were applied for literature searching. Fourteen studies, which meet the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria, are used in this review. Quality assessment was proceeding upon STROBE checklist. Results. Seven factors influencing individuals' intentions and behavior for organ donation are summarized, including: demographic factors, cultural factors, attitudes towards death and funeral, family influence, information accessibility for organ donation, distrust medical community and legislation for organ donation. In addition, two more factors, acceptance of brain death and effectiveness in receiving donation request, are associated with family consent to organ donation. Conclusion. This review highlights factors could influence individual's intention and behavior for organ donation. Potential implications could be implemented base on the effect of these factors. Possible interventions, upon demographic characteristics, dealing with Chinese traditional concept and enhancing knowledge and exposure of organ donation, to Chinese population are discussed. Background: Organ transplantation became a new hope for those living with end-stage organ disease. However, the number of patients waiting for this procedure greatly exceeds the number of available donors. This separation leads to the death of almost 30 Americans per day who are waiting for this life changing procedure. Although Americans have shown a high level of support for organ donation, a large gap exists between the support and intention to register. As one of the most trusted and accessible healthcare professionals, pharmacist may have an opportunity to provide expanded services and education to the public and patients about organ donation. This study looks to understand what motivates registration as an organ donor and identify perceptions of the public about pharmacist-driven education on the process. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, survey-based, exploratory study. A survey instrument was designed and validated. Following pilot testing, the survey was released electronically using Amazon Mechanical Turk. Participants were linked to the survey who are U.S. citizens/permanent residents over the age of eighteen. The 88-item, 10-section survey is based on the Integrated Behavioral Model (IBM) and examines attitudes, perceived norms, and perceived control associated with becoming an organ donor. Three questions also examine their perceptions of pharmacists' role in educating the public about organ donation and whether they feel others would be receptive to this education at the pharmacy. Additional questions examine the impact of media messages, religion, and other common misconceptions of organ donation on the intent to register. A link to Donate Life America is also available electronically to participants who indicate interest in obtaining more information. Results: A total of 523 usable responses were collected out of 551 (95% completion) with 184 (35%) identified as not being registered donors. Non-donors were significantly more likely to hold negative attitudes and less awareness of those around them being registered, when compared to non-donors.
