The 2018 FAO-OIE-WHO (Tripartite) zoonoses guide, “Taking A Multisectoral, One Health Approach: A Tripartite Guide to Addressing Zoonotic Diseases in Countries” (2018 TZG) is being jointly developed to provide member countries with practical guidance on OH approaches to build national mechanisms for multisectoral coordination, communication, and collaboration to address zoonotic disease threats at the animal-human-environment interface. The 2018 TZG updates and expands on the guidance in the one previous jointly-developed, zoonoses-specific guidance document: the 2008 Tripartite “Zoonotic Diseases: A Guide to Establishing Collaboration between Animal and Human Health Sectors at the Country Level”, developed in WHO South-East Asia Region and Western Pacific Region. The 2018 TZG supports building by countries of the resilience and capacity to address emerging and endemic zoonotic diseases such as avian influenza, rabies, Ebola, and Rift Valley fever, as well as food-borne diseases and antimicrobial resistance, and to minimize their impacts on health, livelihoods, and economies. It additionally supports country efforts to implement WHO International Health Regulations (2005) and OIE international standards, to address gaps identified through external and internal health system evaluations, and to achieve targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2018 TZG provides relevant country ministries and agencies with lessons learned and good practices identified from country-level experiences in taking OH approaches for preparedness, prevention, detection and response to zoonotic disease threats, and provides guidance on multisectoral communication, coordination, and collaboration. It informs on regional and country-level OH activities and relevant unisectoral and multisectoral tools available for countries to use.

A concise assessment of the risks to human health and the environment posed by exposure to 1 2-diaminoethane. Commonly known as ethylenediamine (EDA), this compound is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of tetraacetyl ethylenediamine ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) organic flocculants urea resins and fatty bisamides. Its use in photography chemicals may also contribute to its presence in the environment. Concerning environmental behavior, studies indicate rapid biodegradation; bioaccumulation is judged unlikely. Although data on environmental levels and human exposure are extremely limited, the report notes that the production of formulations using EDA usually takes place in well-ventilated enclosed systems thus reducing the potential for occupational exposure via inhalation. Studies conducted in experimental animals show moderate acute toxicity. Findings support the conclusion that EDA is a skin irritant and a skin sensitizer. Data were judged inadequate to support an assessment of mutagenic potential. The report found no evidence of carcinogenicity in animal studies. Although non-neoplastic effects on the liver have been reported, the significance of these findings for human health remains uncertain.

A concise assessment of the risks to human health posed by exposure to 1 1 2 2 tetrachloroethane, a chemical used primarily as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chlorinated hydrocarbons. The document is part of a new series of brief reports aimed at the characterization of hazards and dose-response for exposures to selected industrial chemicals. Studies of environmental behavior and fate support the conclusion that 1 1 2 2-tetrachloroethane is unlikely to contribution to the depletion of stratospheric ozone or to global warming. Animal studies indicate that 1 1 2 2-tetrachloroethane has slight to moderate acute toxicity; the liver is the principal target organ. Studies of long-term exposure demonstrated a significant increase in the incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas in mice, but not in similarly exposed rats. Because of the chemical's declining use, few recent evaluations of toxic effects in humans were available for evaluation."

Chloroform is a clear, colourless, volatile liquid which is used in the production of refrigerants and as a fluoropolymer feedstock. It may be released into the environment from chlorodifluoromethane plants and from pulp and paper mills using chlorine-based chemicals for bleaching and disinfection purposes. Chloroform is also the principal by-product of water disinfectant processes. It is estimated that the vast majority of chloroform emissions into the environment are natural in origin.
