The interface between the user of a computer-based information system and the system itself has been evolving at a rapid rate. The use of a video screen, with its color and graphics capabilities, has been one factor in this evolution. The development of light pens, mice, and other screen image manipulation devices has been another. With these capabilities has come a natural desire to find more effective ways to make use of them. In particular, much work has gone into the development of interface systems that add visual elements such as icons and graphics to text. The desire to use these visual elements effectively in communication between the user and the system has resulted in a healthy competition of ideas and discussion of the principles governing the development and use of such elements. In the late 19th century we established the energy network to distribute electric and thermal energy, launching the modern society. The analog communication network became popular in the middle of the 20th century. And now, at the end of the 20th century, we have global digital information networks.Along with the advancement of the communication network, the progress of the information processing technology can be classified into three historical phases. The first phase technology is physical information processing, treating physical data from the real world. This technology is often called ?signal processing? and is based on the physical law of nature. The second phase is free from the physical constraints. It is logical information processing, dealing with knowledge and rules. The most important aspect of this phase is consistency. ?Provable? is employed to confirm the reality of the system.Based on the advanced computer and network technology, we are entering the third phase of information processing, which is ?Kansei? information processing. (?Kansei? is a Japanese word expressing some subjective ability referred to as ?sensibility?, ?intuition?, ?affection? or ?emotion?). Emotional resonance or consent is important in the pursuit of reality in this phase.Multimedia modeling to harmonize different media and systems is one of the key technologies in the third phase of information processing. Disney films reflect the current values and beliefs of society and have the power to influence their audiences in the perception of what is beautiful, and whether appearance does or does not matter. This book gives an overview of beauty ideals, body images, and appearances in Disneys feature films. Seven main films are chosen for this analysis to allow for a comparison across time: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937), Cinderella (1950), The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), and Frozen (2013). The survey determines to what extent Disney films make use of the beauty-goodness stereotype the equation of appearance and personality. The characters are analyzed as to which bodily features they exhibit, and how these features are in tune with dominant beauty discourses during the times the films were made. Furthermore, the narratives are examined to find out how they topics beauty and appearance are rendered within them, demonstrating that earlier films frequently rely on traditional and stereotypical depictions and notions of beauty, whereas more recent productions represent more ambiguity and diversity.
