Book Description
This book is the memoir of Kieran James, and details his experiences as co-founder of West Perth Football Club's unofficial cheer squad from 1984 to 1986. The book details "traditional", "hot" support for West Perth Football Club among teenaged supporters from middle-class and working-class backgrounds. The book shows how, because of neo-liberal ideologies and the corporatization of football, the new national league (the "expanded VFL" / AFL) relegated the WAFL to a second-tier league in 1987. This move took place over the heads of ordinary football supporters and two WAFL club presidents. Moves to bring the game closer to the people in 1984, such as holding the best-and-fairest award count night at Perth Entertainment Centre, should be seen in this light. This book will allow supporters to relive great teams, great players, and great matches from a wonderful era in WA football 1984-86 before West Coast Eagles joined the expanded VFL.

Book Description
Making Australia Slightly Better Than Average Again™ is Mark Swivel's soundbite manifesto as he embarks on a bid for the senate in 2019. Swivel argues our political class detached from the rest of us a long time ago and has no real purpose beyond preserving itself. He advocates a new populism that's about making communities worth living in and building a future where government serves us and not the market - where the test is always 'so, tell me how does this bring people together?' An Australia that is Slightly Better Than Average... like the one he grew up in when there was free university education, a sane housing policy, and we all seemed to be part of a national adventure. "Disruption is everywhere except politics. Let's change that." This is Mark Swivel's message to all Australians in this immensely readable, very funny, yet insightful book. Read it and be inspired. What The Barefoot Investor did for personal finance, Swivel does for politics. - Colleen Ryan, Author and former editor of the Australian Financial Review With humour and insight, Mark Swivel skewers our political life: the dominance of corporatism and consumerism and the abandonment of the public sphere. Our politicians are so enthralled by vested interests, so absorbed in their own ambition they are unable to govern in Australia's long-term interest. Swivel rightly argues we all have a part to play in rebuilding and sustaining our Common Wealth. - Anne Cooombs, Activist, author and former chair of Get Up

Hold it! Sit! Stay! That’s better. No, I am not suggesting that you go to the New York Times and tell them, “I have a book, written by the devil. Only he’s not really the devil. He’s an extra-terrestrial. And he’s not evil. He’s God’s good brother. It’s God who is evil.” Do you think I came to you to have you put in a funny farm? You’re to publish my manuscript under your own name, as science fiction. Isn’t science fiction the only format under which any sane moral philosophy could be published for the past fifty years? You agree? I am so glad. I have to go now. The Overlords are waiting to take me home.

Book Description
Talking Politics is a philosophical examination of some of the basic concepts of political discourse. Its primary focus is on the ordinary; on what is said by politicians, in newspapers and by people in pubs, rather than on the works of political theorists. This is a work of, but not on political theory. Talking Politics is: * Invaluable as a source of reference for students, and contains a detailed index * Arranged thematically, around topics such as `Nation'. Each entry has copious cross-references and suggestions for further reading A. W. Sparkes is uniquely qualified to write such a book, combining some thirty years' teaching as a philosopher with wide experience of, and a life-long fascination with, politics. His attitude is that of a critical, but uncynical, observer.

Book Description
This (large-print edition) book is the memoir of Kieran James, and details his experiences as co-founder of West Perth Football ClubÕs unofficial cheer squad (hardcore support) from 1984 to 1986 (Western Australian Football League / WAFL). Using MarshÕs theory of the Òillusion of violenceÓ, the author links the cheer squad to the academic literature on British soccer hooligans, Italian ultras, and other soccer supporter groups from around the world. The book details ÒtraditionalÓ, ÒhotÓ support for West Perth Football Club among teenaged supporters from middle-class and working-class backgrounds. The findings conform to Armstrong and HughsonÕs idea of fluid Òpost-modernÓ Òneo-tribesÓ where affiliations are very loose and people can easily adjust their degree of commitment to a group and / or leave the group when their personal priorities change. The book also allows the reader to relive great WAFL matches and meet again key players from the era.

Book Description
Rethinking Youth Citizenship After the Age of Entitlement provides a primer for exploring hard questions about how young people understand, experience and enact their citizenship in uncertain times and about their senses of membership and belonging. It examines how familiar modes of exclusion are compounded by punitive youth policies in ways that are concealed by neoliberal discourses. It considers the role of key institutions in constructing young people's citizenship and looks at the ways in which some young people are opting out of established enactments of citizenship while creating new ones. Critically reflecting on recent scholarly interest in the geographical, relational, affective and temporal dimensions of young people's experiences of citizenship, it also reinvigorates the discussion about citizenship rights and entitlements, and what these might mean for young people. The book draws on global research and theories of citizenship but has a particular focus on Australia, which provides a unique example of a country that has fared well economically yet is mimicking the austerity measures of the United Kingdom and Europe. It concludes with an argument for a rethinking of citizenship which recognises young people's rights as citizens and the ways in which these interact with their lived experience at a time that has been characterised as 'the end of the age of entitlement'.

Book Description
Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in Australia deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self- regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policy makers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Australia will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law.

Book Description
'This history of the Waterhouse dynasty is a cut above the field of racing books that burst from the barriers this time of year' - Sydney Morning Herald Drama, glamour, scandal, success - and very high stakes. The story of Australia's best known horse racing family has it all. When it comes to racing, the name most Australians associate with the racetrack is Waterhouse. This is their compelling story. High Stakes takes us from Bill Waterhouse's introduction to the world as a sixteen-year-old, working as a bookmaker for his father in the late thirties - going on to make money both on and off the track - to the headlines caused by his involvement in the notorious Fine Cotton affair in the eighties. It examines his son Robbie's rise as a respected bookie and a knowledgeable judge of horses, to his spectacular fall, as a result of that same Fine Cotton affair, which led to a life ban from involvement in the racing industry. While the ban was lifted in 2001, he keeps a low profile these days. As Kennedy reveals, the same cannot be said of Robbie's wife, Gai, daughter of the legendary horse trainer TJ Smith. In a male-dominated world, she has gone on to rival her father as one of Australia's best trainers, training horses for a star-studded clientele that has ranged from John Singleton to the Queen of England. Yet as High Stakes shows, the scandal aside, the marriage between Gai and Robbie was always going to be problematic. As the Sydney Morning Herald put it: 'It's not that the Smiths and the Waterhouses were necessarily the Capulets and the Montagues but the country's leading trainer and the world's biggest bookmaker were hardly natural kinsfolk either.' Despite an already colourful history, when their son, Tom, stepped into the family business and became one of the best-known and most controversial bookies the country had ever seen, Kennedy describes how the dramas for the Waterhouse dynasty were only just beginning... This is the book for anyone who wants to know the inside story of contemporary Australian horse racing, a world where premiers and millionaires rub shoulders with gangsters and girls with fancy hats. It's a world of passion, action - and very high stakes.
