Book Description
When the oppressive ruler of Cuba stepped down in 2018, the Cuban people led by Javier Hernandez started a revolution to prevent another oppressive ruler from taking power. Javier's beloved wife Vanessa Hernandez was publicly assassinated by an unidentified sniper while peacefully protesting in December 2018. Her death led to worldwide outrage and ultimately the United States backing the revolution. With the help of the United States military, the rebels were able to overthrow the oppressive government on June 26, 2019. The Cuban people were led to believe that the United States military would only occupy Cuba for a one year reconstruction period in order to maintain peace while a new democratic government was created. Several years have now passed, and the United States military presence has increased to the point of militant rule. It now appears that Cuba traded one oppressive ruler for another, and the Cuban people are growing restless for the freedom they believe they deserve.

Book Description
The first anthology of poetry, prose, and drama by second-generation Cuban American writers. Let’s Hear Their Voices brings together works by ten distinguished and emerging Cuban American writers of the “second generation”—writers who were born between 1960 and the mid-1980s in the United States to Cuban parents or have a mixed ethnic background. Called “ABCs” (American-Born Cubans) or“AmeriCubans,” these writers experiment with different formal approaches and lace their work with Cuban Spanish to give voice to hybrid identities and cultural legacies within the contemporary multicultural United States. An introduction by Iraida H. López identifies key tropes in their poetry, prose, and drama, and provides an overview of Cuban American literature since the 1960s. With both original and previously published pieces by award-winning authors—including President Obama’s Second Inaugural Poet, Richard Blanco—the volume makes a welcome contribution to the fields of Latinx and American literature, as well as critical discussions across disciplines about the intersections of latinidad with race, class, gender, and sexuality. “The selections chosen are excellent across the board. Collectively, they give a sense of the directions in which second-generation Cuban American writing is moving, as well as of its abiding concern with the country of origin of the first generation. The writing is impressive, strong, and compelling.” — Marta Caminero-Santangelo, University of Kansas

Book Description
Within one of the most complex musical categories yet to surface, Cal Tjader quietly pioneered the genre as a jazz vibraphonist, composer, arranger and bandleader from the 1950s through the 1980s. Reid tells the life story of a humble musician, written in a familiar, conversational tone that reveals Tjader's complex charisma. Tjader left behind a legacy and a labyrinth of influence, attested by his large audience and innovation that would change the course of jazz. Expanded and revised, this intimate biography now includes additional interviews and anecdotes from Tjader's family, bandmates, and community, print research, and rare photographs, presenting a full history of an undervalued musician, as well as a detailed account of the progression of Latin Jazz.

Book Description
The Blood of Cuba is the true-to-life story of an innocent peasant boy, Cesar Mérez, growing up in post-revolutionary Cuba and his meteoric rise to the rank of colonel in the Cuban military. It chronicles the transformation Cesar undergoes due to the human brutality he witnesses while fighting for socialist causes in the mountains of Venezuela and the jungles of Angola. Eventually, through a twist of fate, he is exiled to the United States where his life is changed forever. At the same time, the story parallels three days in the troubled life of his unknown American half-brother, Dr. Thomas Savage. Tom is a physician living in Pennsylvania, who struggles with his inner demons and everyday family problems. Interwoven throughout the story are the lusts and loves of the two men. The reader will grow to both love and hate each of the brothers. Ultimately, after living divergent lives, fate brings the brothers together and, out of survival, they are forced to try and destroy each other.
