Book Description
In 1998, Jacob Lief, a 21-year-old American university student, met school teacher Malizole "Banks" Gwaxula in a township tavern in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After bonding over beers and a shared passion for education, Gwaxula invited Lief to live with him in the township. Inspired by their fortuitous meeting--which brought together two men separated by race, nationality, and age--and by the spirit of ubuntu, roughly translated as "I am because you are", the two men embarked on an unexpectedly profound journey. Their vision? To provide vulnerable children in the townships with what every child deserves-everything. Today, their organization, Ubuntu Education Fund, is upending conventional wisdom about how to break the cycle of poverty. Shunning traditional development models, Ubuntu has redefined the concept of scale, focusing on how deeply it can impact each child's life rather than how many it can reach. Ubuntu provides everything a child needs and deserves, from prenatal care for pregnant mothers to support through university-essentially, from cradle to career. Their child-centered approach reminds us that one's birthplace should not determine one's future. I Am Because You Are sets forth an unflinching portrayal of the unique rewards and challenges of the nonprofit world while offering a bold vision for a new model of development.

Post-war migrants coming to Britain were soon renamed immigrants in laws that prevented their entry despite their British nationality. You Are Your Best Thing
Author: Tarana Burke
Publisher: Random House Trade Paperbacks
ISBN: 0593243633
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Tarana Burke and Dr. Brené Brown bring together a dynamic group of Black writers, organizers, artists, academics, and cultural figures to discuss the topics the two have dedicated their lives to understanding and teaching: vulnerability and shame resilience. Contributions by Kiese Laymon, Imani Perry, Laverne Cox, Jason Reynolds, Austin Channing Brown, and more NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY MARIE CLAIRE AND BOOKRIOT It started as a text between two friends. Tarana Burke, founder of the ‘me too.’ Movement, texted researcher and writer Brené Brown to see if she was free to jump on a call. Brené assumed that Tarana wanted to talk about wallpaper. They had been trading home decorating inspiration boards in their last text conversation so Brené started scrolling to find her latest Pinterest pictures when the phone rang. But it was immediately clear to Brené that the conversation wasn’t going to be about wallpaper. Tarana’s hello was serious and she hesitated for a bit before saying, “Brené, you know your work affected me so deeply, but as a Black woman, I’ve sometimes had to feel like I have to contort myself to fit into some of your words. The core of it rings so true for me, but the application has been harder.” Brené replied, “I’m so glad we’re talking about this. It makes sense to me. Especially in terms of vulnerability. How do you take the armor off in a country where you’re not physically or emotionally safe?” Long pause. “That’s why I’m calling,” said Tarana. “What do you think about working together on a book about the Black experience with vulnerability and shame resilience?” There was no hesitation. Burke and Brown are the perfect pair to usher in this stark, potent collection of essays on Black shame and healing. Along with the anthology contributors, they create a space to recognize and process the trauma of white supremacy, a space to be vulnerable and affirm the fullness of Black love and Black life.

I Am Because We Are
Author: Chidiogo Akunyili-Parr
Publisher: House of Anansi
ISBN: 148700964X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 339
Book Description
In this innovative and intimate memoir, a daughter tells the story of her mother, a pan-African hero who faced down misogyny and battled corruption in Nigeria. Inspired by the African philosophy of Ubuntu — the importance of community over the individual — and outraged by injustice, Dora Akunyili took on fraudulent drug manufacturers whose products killed millions, including her sister. A woman in a man’s world, she was elected and became a cabinet minister, but she had to deal with political manoeuvrings, death threats, and an assassination attempt for defending the voiceless. She suffered for it, as did her marriage and six children. I Am Because We Are illuminates the role of kinship, family, and the individual’s place in society, while revealing a life of courage, how community shaped it, and the web of humanity that binds us all.

Intellectual History in Contemporary South Africa
Author: M. Eze
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230109691
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
In examining the intellectual history in contemporary South Africa, Eze engages with the emergence of ubuntu as one discourse that has become a mirror and aftermath of South Africa s overall historical narrative. This book interrogates a triple socio-political representation of ubuntu as a displacement narrative for South Africa s colonial consciousness; as offering a new national imaginary through its inclusive consciousness, in which different, competing, and often antagonistic memories and histories are accommodated; and as offering a historicity in which the past is transformed as a symbol of hope for the present and the future. This book offers a model for African intellectual history indignant to polemics but constitutive of creative historicism and healthy humanism.

JASMINE

Book Description
Preface Jasmine is a flower, which is associated with love. Jasmine also symbolizes beauty and sensuality. In some cultures, Jasmine represents appreciation and good luck. When used in religious ceremonies jasmine represents purity. Jasmine’s meaning varies depending on the culture and setting. Jasmine. It is originated from Persian ﻦﻴﻤﺳﺎﻳ or ﻦﻤﺳﺎﻳ, (Yasmeen or Yasmin), which means the Yas flower. Facebook has over the time emerged as the beautiful platform for not only social interaction but also for finding new friends. This enables meeting people of one’s choicest friends. Friendship many times developed into intimate relations and turns into love. I read the book ”Not Equal to Love” written Senior Novelist Sri Suraj Prakash ji. That gave me idea to find some clues on the Facebook and attempt to weave a story. I studied couple of cases and have woven a story. The story in Jasmine has been flavoured with various contours of love both emotional as well as physical. I have written this Poetic novel in English as my maiden effort. I have picked a character from Indonesia and one from India. I found the culture and social advancement in Indonesia attractive and practical and Indian culture and behaviour well known to me. I have developed the character as a bindas person named Jasmine, who is emotionally very strong and very practical in life. She faces various odd and sad parts in life bravely and loves her Life Stars very intensely. She happens to be abandoned-like from her parents and she grew under the custody of her Uncle and Aunty. She encountered all religions in life. She selects her life partner herself and begins her life nicely. But she had to face demise of her husband after a short married life. Later she encounters with an Indian person on Facebook, which becomes her darling person in life and who rejuvenates love in her life. She dedicatingly sinks into that life and lives happily. While configuring some special effects of love, I relied on the literary excerpts from other works and with their quotes have tried to bring new dimension to love. Similarly have also inserted some songs, which are practically used to convey feelings to the other person with whom one loves. These practical but experimental steps, I feel, would give a new look to the work and should look as raw but real flash of love expressions. I was asked why did I select the title “Jasmine”. I think when writing a poetic love story, Jasmine is the most suitable title as it embraces beauty, sensuality, purity appreciation and good luck I have been writing poetry in Hindi. I have written stories and novels in Hindi in potry format as Poetic love story or Poetic Novel. My poetic novels namely ‘Mere Hisse ki Dhoop’ and ‘Urvashi’ have been published in Hindi. As I have been writing in Hindi. Jasmine is my first attempt in English. I sincerely hope that this poetic novel would attract the readers with new idea and would receive comment and suggestions from the readers.
