Lola Taubman was born in 1925 in the Carpathian Mountains (then Czechoslovakia). Life was rich in her extended Jewish family, part of a community with citizens from many backgrounds, where multiple languages were common currency, and education mingled with the joys and games of youth. By the late 1930s, anti-Semitism grew, and communities were disrupted. In May 1944, Lola and her family, and the remaining Jews from her town, were sent to Auschwitz. Lola was chosen to work; her immediate family perished. In January 1945, as the allies approached, the Nazis moved her, with many others from Auschwitz, on a series of death marches. Life as a DP followed, with a 4-year struggle to emigrate to the U.S. Arriving in New York in 1949, she later relocated to the Detroit area, where she married Sam Taubman and raised a family. A study of the Iraqi Jewish community of Zakho that investigates the community's attachment to the Land of Israel, the effects of Zionist activity, and immigration to Palestine and Israel. Unwitting Zionists examines the Jewish community in the northern Kurdistan town of Zakho from the end of the Ottoman period until the disappearance of the community through aliyah by 1951. Because of its remote location, Zakho was far removed from the influence of the Jewish religious leadership in Iraq and preserved many of its religious traditions independently, becoming the most important Jewish community in the region and known as "Jerusalem of Kurdistan." Author Haya Gavish argues, therefore, that when the community was exposed to Zionism, it began to open up to external influences and activity. Originally published in Hebrew, Unwitting Zionists uses personal memoirs, historical records, and interviews to investigate the duality between Jewish tradition and Zionism among Zakho's Jews. Gavish consults a variety of sources to examine the changes undergone by the Jewish community as a result of its religious affiliation with Eretz-Israel, its exposure to Zionist efforts, and its eventual immigration to Israel. Because relatively little written documentation about Zakho exists, Gavish relies heavily on folkloristic sources like personal recollections and traditional stories, including extensive material from her own fieldwork with an economically and demographically diverse group of men and women from Zakho. She analyzes this firsthand information within a historical framework to reconstruct a communal reality and lifestyle that was virtually unknown to anyone outside of the community. Appendixes contain biographical details of the interviewees for additional background. Gavish also addresses the relative merits of personal memoirs, optimal interviewer-interviewee relationships, and the problem of relying on the interviewees' memories in her study. There is a vast and varied literature on the formation of 19th-century Jewish diasporic communities worldwide. Now, added to this are the previously unpublished autobiographical works of two members of the Schrire family, which form the core of The Reb and the Rebel, mainly covering the period 1892-1913. They comprise a diary, a poem and a memoir. The first two, written by Reb Yehuda Leib Schrire (1851-1912), and translated from pre-Ben Yehuda Hebrew into English, chart his journey through a number of countries, including Lithuania, Holland, England and South Africa. The third is by his son, Harry Nathan (1895-1980). The social history within these documents paints a lively picture of South African Jewish communities at the turn of the 20th century. They reveal tiny details of shipboard life below deck; major issues of religious belief and practice in Lithuanian shtetls, Johannesburg goldfields and District Six homes; and global issues of mass migration, pandemics and war. They show how community formation in Cape Town replicates the orthodoxy of der alte heym, even as the new generation is integrated into a life undreamed of in the Old Country. Analyses of the contexts and authors, together with Appendices which include a genealogy, glossary and catalogued artworks, combine here to make the South African Jewish past come alive.
