Book Description
Most of my poems are happy ones. I have always written to express my emotions or moods. The Reason For The Season was written, of course, to show the real reason we celebrate Christmas. Some think Home Again is sad. I wrote it after a visit with my brother to our old home place. I think we felt nostalgia rather than sadness. Our Matt was written mostly for his mother to express my feelings for this young man, who even in junior high showed a real compassion and friendliness for his young classmate who was confined to a wheelchair. I wrote In Passing after death of my first husband when I passed by the farm where we had lived. Snapshot was written after a similar experience. Tribute to Sandburg was written after a trip to Conemara. It put me in a contemplative mood because even though Sandburg had long been one of my favorites, I had known very little about his private life or family. I wrote A Poem Upon Demand in a playful mood when I could not think of one to fulfill as assignment at our writers club. I Saw You Last Night I wrote one morning after a dream. The Class Reunion was written for our Alumni Banquet. It has been a favorite of several of my classmates and of Bill Robinson, my favorite country editor. A Perfect Snow Day I wrote for my garden club after a big snow. I have enjoyed writing and sharing my poems with friends although I kept my poetry private for many years until my friend, Judy Goodspeed, encouraged me to attend writers club with her in 2002. Prior to this I attended two workshops at St. Simonds Island, Georgia, one in Lawton, Oklahoma, one in Abilene, Texas and several at East Central University at Ada, Oklahoma. Although my instructors were encouraging and some even suggested I should try to have some of them published, because I was so busy at other things, I just never did. It could also have been lack of courage. I hope those who choose to read my poems enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

Book Description
The poet Abraham Shlonsky (1900–1973) can be regarded as the main architect of Jewish Modernism and Hebrew secular culture. In his crucial contribution, Ari Ofengenden disentangles Shlonsky’s work from Zionist readings and shows how his poetics redeem experiences of radical political displacement, exile and alienation through the use of a precise, chiseled yet playfully enigmatic style. Writing on immigrants, refugees and urban outcasts following the traumatic events of the First World War and the Civil War in Russia, his poetry constitutes a fusion of Modernist European poetry with biblical and rabbinic sources with the influences of Georg Trakl and Rimbaud. The book situates Shlonsky’s poetry in the context of his “rebellion” against the romantic poetry of C.N. Bialik and as an active participant in the European styles of Symbolism and Expressionism. The book is indispensable for understanding Modern Hebrew and Jewish culture, and more generally as an exemplar of today's more prevalent hybridizations of tradition and modernity.

Book Description
A gentle, imaginative introduction to the skills all creative writers need. Breaking down the elements that go into successful imaginative works, The Creative Writer leads aspiring writers through the skills needed to construct each. The assignments, designed to make students more aware of language and more confident in their own ingenuity, build on each other until beginning creative writers have successfully created their own stories, poems, and essays. • Simple but innovative exercises encourage young writers to strengthen their vocabulary and become aware of the patterns of sentences • Legends and folklore are used to teach point of view, characterization, plotting, and other vital skills • Classic poetry serves as a model for the student’s own original poems • Unlike most “how to write” books, The Creative Writer is designed to be used in a mentor/student relationship, with teaching, guidance, and evaluation tips provided for the mentor or teacher • Can be used as a complement to Writing With Skill or on its own
