During the International Congress for Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine, held in Paris from April 28th to 30th 1965 under the patronage of the W orld Federation for Mental Health, about one hundred papers were presented and the following panel discussions held: Electroencephalography and Hypnosis, chairman Prof. H. FISCHGOLD (Paris); The Teaching of Hypnosis, chairmen Dr. C. CEDERCREUTZ (Hamina) and Dr. H. RosEN (Baltimore); Hypnosis and Pain, chairman Dr. M.H. ERICKSON (Phoenix); Hypnosis and the Psychotropic Drugs, chairman Dr. B.B. RAGINSKY (Montreal). The official languages of the Congress (German, French and English) were not always the speakers' mother tongues. A certain amount of editing was therefore necessary before publication, and this retarded the printing. Approximately half of the papers appear in this volume. We wish to thank the following organizations for the help they granted the Congress. Prof. J. Hypnosis is an interaction where a trance state of consciousness is induced and utilized to produce beneficial psychological and physiological changes by suggestions. Used since ancient times, today it is a scientific, highly effective treatment in medicine freed from authoritarian, manipulative and esoteric burden. It allows communication with the unconscious mind where otherwise unrecognized and are organized and regulated. A major advantage for patients is that after simple guidance they can use it themselves in the form of self-hypnosis. Moreover, in acute medicine such as emergencies or surgeries patients often enter a natural trance state all by itself making hypnotic induction dispensable and hypnotic communication easy and fundamental. However, the potential of hypnosis is yet widely unknown or underrepresented both in psychotherapy and somatic medicine. A deeper knowledge of clinical hypnosis and a wider distribution of relevant study results can bridge the historical living apart and bring back hypnosis to medicine. Hypnosis and suggestions provide a model to explain a wide variety of beneficial as well as harmful effects in medicine, and thus supplement the placebo/nocebo model. In addition, hypnosis and hypnotherapy opens interesting scientific insights into human brain functions, and into character and functioning of suggestions. The goal of leaving the very special setting of books and hypnosis journals and presenting hypnosis to a wide spectrum of readers in psychology and medicine is to increase its visibility, its impact and application. The application concerns both, the specific treatment of specific patients with specific complaints by an expert called hypnotherapy and the more general use of therapeutic hypnotic communication of health care personnel with all patients in all medical situations. On the other hand, hypnosis could benefit from a possible desirable stimulation of further research in this field.

Certaines approches de l’hypnose impliquent de revenir sur le passé pour réfléchir à ce qui peut avoir causé le problème. Pour certaines personnes, cette approche correspond à leurs attentes, pour d’autres se concentrer sur le problème n’est pas forcément bénéfique. Comme son nom l’indique, la pratique de l’hypnose centrée sur les solutions ne se concentre pas sur ce qui est arrivé dans le passé, mais s’attache à considérer la situation actuelle et l’avenir. L’orientation solution issue des travaux de Steve de Shazer et de Insoo Kim Berg dans les années 1980 constitue une deuxième vague en psychothérapie brève, après celle de Palo Alto. Elle cherche à aider les gens à obtenir rapidement des changements positifs, des solutions, plutôt que de se concentrer sur le problème. Thierry Servillat, qui a étudié auprès d’eux, propose – en un ouvrage clair et pratique construit autour des outils solutionnistes – d’intégrer cette approche dans la pratique hypnotique. L’hypnose centrée sur les solutions offre au patient un état de relaxation profonde où le subconscient devient plus ouvert à la suggestion positive. L’intégration de la relaxation et de la visualisation guidée améliore ainsi le travail de solution en cours.
