'What is Hungarian?' was the key question that exercised interwar Hungary. The trauma of the peace of 1918 sent the country searching for its true identity. Films were seen as part of the cultural discourse responsible for the shaping of national identity. As talkies took off, audiences, filmmakers, critics, and officials began to question the Hungary they saw on screen. The debate escalated quickly: was the Hungary familiar from the screens also familiar from 'real' life? Was Hungarian cinema truly Hungarian? Did the participation of Jewish Hungarians in the film industry make the sector and the films Jewish? Could Jews be Hungarian? The answers proposed were that the films were Jewish, and to be Hungarian was to be not Jewish. It was decided that Hungarian cinema should become purely Hungarian. Acts of Parliament were passed to ban Jewish Hungarians from above-the-line roles. This nominally racially pure industry produced over 200 films in 1938-1944. This book tells the story of Hungarian sound cinema and the debates that shaped and distorted screen representations of Hungary up to 1944, using original interdisciplinary research based on a fresh look at the film texts, their context of production, and the critical canon.

This book analyses the uses of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a foreign star in Hollywood through a film philosophical, de-westernizing and sonic critical framework. It offers very close readings of the film texts, of the roles Schwarzenegger performs, and the rhetorical strategies he adopts outside his film performances to show that in spite of attempts to occupy the position of an emblematic member of the U.S. national body Schwarzenegger remains irrevocably outside as an accented migrant body continuously accumulating markers of belonging that by their very necessity attest to their insufficiency. The book’s central project is to trace back, from the uses to which a migrant star such as Schwarzenegger is put on the screen, the construction of a sense or idea of a U.S. national community through the cinema. Given that the appeal to the American myth of an immigrant nation that promises to erase difference is fundamental to the Schwarzenegger star persona, the central aim of this book is to explore the uses of his stardom as an embodiment of the promise of America and its contradictions and exclusions.

Between three and four thousand civilians, primarily Serbian and Jewish, were murdered in the Novi Sad massacre of 1942. Hungarian soldiers and gendarmes carried out the crime in the city and surrounding areas, in territory Hungary occupied after the German attack on Yugoslavia. The perpetrators believed their acts to be a contribution to a new order in Europe, and as a means to ethnically cleanse the occupied lands. In marked contrast to other massacres, the Horthy regime investigated the incident and tried and convicted the commanding officers in 1943-44. Other trials would follow. During the 1960s, a novel and film telling the story of the massacre sparked the first public open debate about the Hungarian Holocaust. This book examines public contentions over the Novi Sad massacre from its inception in 1942 until the final trial in 2011. It demonstrates how attitudes changed over time toward this war crime and the Holocaust through different political regimes and in Hungarian society. The book also views how the larger European context influenced Hungarian debates, and how Yugoslavia dealt with memories of the massacre.
