Garnett Myrie came into this world on 27 September 1953 and grew up in the hills of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. When his uncle went to the United States as a farm worker in 1960 and brought back Black liberation literature, he became enamored with “Black Power”. He got himself in trouble when he became bold enough to put his fist in the air and shouted for everyone to hear: “I am black and I am proud.” Why should people hate me for loving myself? But he lived in a very conservative rural community where all the women adored the Queen of England and all the men aspired to become English Gentlemen. Eventually, he got used to being treated harshly, became fearless and refused to cry out in pain. He would rub cow-itch (Mucuna pruriens) and scallion on his palm to deaden the skin whenever he thought he was to get a beating, but he was no longer afraid of pain. Unfortunately, he occasionally forgot that he was handling cow itch and inadvertently rubbed his eyes with his fingers or take out his penis to pea which lead to several hours of enormous suffering as washing with soap and water did not help. He was an erasable child, however, each time the people tried to subdue him, like a cork, he would surface again. As he was not getting along in the country, his mother arranged for him to live with her sister in Kingston. While he worked as a security guard, he was introduced to and came under the influence of Dr. Walter Rodney, a radical university professor. When both he and Dr. Rodney became “Persona non-grata” for their radical activities, they escaped to Cuba. Dr. Rodney subsequently went back to his homeland (Guyana) 1980 to run for political office and was assassinated. Garnett joined the Cuba Army and was sent by Fidel Castro to fight in the successful war for independence in Angola. As he was fighting against the South African Army, he had orders to kill all white men he encountered. He became a killing machine. He was personally thanked and honored by both Fidel Castro and the First President of a liberated Angola, Agostino Neto. Having returned to Jamaica, he became a successful husband, businessman and father to a dozen children by ten women while he was happily married. As he grew rich and older, however, he was diagnosed with diabetes and became blind. He became more mellow in his old age and repented his “bad boy” ways to become an influential and beloved leader, husband and father.

Justice as Equality makes a unique contribution to the philosophical and intellectual tradition of the English-speaking Caribbean by exploring the theory of justice underpinning the life, work, and writings of former Prime Minister of Jamaica and renowned Third World Statesman the late Michael Manley (1924-1997). Manley's singular Caribbean vision of justice was forged in a post-colonial context that he described as being too radically disfigured by inequalities to be improved by «mere tinkering». This book posits that equality has become unfashionable in social analysis and contemporary politics, in part due to the increased significance of values such as identity, diversity, and difference, in tandem with a misunderstanding of the concept of equality. It argues for a reclaiming of a multi-faceted and complex way of understanding equality in light of Manley's thought. Through an engagement with the norms of justice developed within the Catholic social teaching tradition, this book examines, clarifies, and deepens Manley's Caribbean account of «justice as equality». Manley's theory is a deeply relational theory one of justice and equality that roots fundamental human equality in the relationship to divine transcendence. It calls for the dismantling of all relationships of oppression and domination that result when the fundamental equality of all human beings is disregarded. It takes account of the multiple dimensions of the human person, and calls a society 'just' when it allows for the flourishing of every member, specifically through full participation in the life of the society.

In 1962 Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago became independent countries; Barbados followed in 1966. In the years leading up to these events, the history of the British West Indies was written largely by the British, the colonial power, who focused on the process of decolonization and the key local players involved. After independence, local scholars also focused on the role of political leaders in the newly independent countries. To date, scholars have paid little attention to the impact of these events on the local populations of these islands. Decolonization and the Other: The Case of the British West Indies explores the local perspectives on, and reactions to, events by using West Indian literature to supplement the historical record. Beginning in the 1930s when local demands for political participation increased, through the process of decolonization, and into the early years of independence, West Indian writers used their life experiences to document local reaction. West Indian literature first appeared in 1950, when British publishers became interested in island authors and their novels. By using the novels to supplement the historical record, we can gain a better understanding of the process of decolonization and the early years of independence in the British West Indies.
