Publisher: British Columbia, Forest Practices Branch
ISBN: 9780772631862
Category : Forest productivity

Pages : 12
Book Description
Contains instructions on obtaining necessary data for using a stand density management diagram, which is used for projecting stand growth through time to rotation. An example of silviculture data from British Columbia illustrates the procedures presented. Types of data covered in the instructions include stand density, top height, species composition, site index, region, age structure, the likely growth trajectory, degree of clumping of trees, and mean diameter.

Book Description
This guide provides a step-by-step example of how to obtain rough yield predictions at rotation for a spacing prescription through the use of a stand density management diagram (SDMD). A six-metre tall hemlock stand on site index 27 m is used in this example.

Stand Density Management Diagrams for Lodgepole Pine, White Spruce and Interior Douglas-fir
Author: Craig Farnden
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Douglas fir
Languages : en
Pages : 37
Book Description
Density manipulation is one of the most powerful tools available to silviculturists to achieve a broad range of silvicultural objectives. One of the most effective methods of planning density management in even-aged stands is through the use of stand density management diagrams. These diagrams graphically depict the temporal relationships between stand density, top height, quadratic mean diameter and mean tree volume. They allow the user to develop and project crop plans through time, to determine the optimum timing of thinnings, to determine the operational feasibility of thinnings, and to contrast potential outcomes from a number of stand management regimes. The stand density management diagrams for lodgepole pine, white spruce and interior Douglas-fir in this report were derived from managed stand yield tables produced by TASS, an individual tree, distance-dependent growth model. The report describes their use in planning thinning regimes and making preliminary yield estimations.

The Practice of Silviculture
Author: Mark S. Ashton
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119270952
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 776
Book Description
The most up-to-date, comprehensive resource on silviculture that covers the range of topics and issues facing today’s foresters and resource professionals The tenth edition of the classic work, The Practice of Silviculture: Applied Forest Ecology, includes the most current information and the results of research on the many issues that are relevant to forests and forestry. The text covers such timely topics as biofuels and intensive timber production, ecosystem and landscape scale management of public lands, ecosystem services, surface drinking water supplies, urban and community greenspace, forest carbon, fire and climate, and much more. In recent years, silvicultural systems have become more sophisticated and complex in application, particularly with a focus on multi-aged silviculture. There have been paradigm shifts toward managing for more complex structures and age-classes for integrated and complementary values including wildlife, water and open space recreation. Extensively revised and updated, this new edition covers a wide range of topics and challenges relevant to the forester or resource professional today. This full-color text offers the most expansive book on silviculture and: Includes a revised and expanded text with clear language and explanations Covers the many cutting-edge resource issues that are relevant to forests and forestry Contains boxes within each chapter to provide greater detail on particular silvicultural treatments and examples of their use Features a completely updated bibliography plus new photographs, tables and figures The Practice of Silviculture: Applied Forest Ecology, Tenth Edition is an invaluable resource for students and professionals in forestry and natural resource management.
