Book Description
Excerpt from Making Horticulture Pay: Experiences in Gardening and Fruit Growing HE prime object of Making Horticulture Pay is not to teach the specialist how to make his specialty profitable; he knows that already. Nor is the principal aim to teach mere money making that has long been over-emphasized on every hand, with the result that people are so attracted by the glitter of gold that they lose sight of the really profitable features of the thing in hand, Whether that be gardening, orcharding, or general business. To make ho'rticulture pay in the largest sense is to realize and establish an improved mode of liv ing, a better appreciation of what is good in life, a deeper sympathy and understanding of the universe as typified by cultivated plants. Hence the dom inant idea of this book is to encourage the average farmer. And householder to emancipate himself and his family at least a little from the routine still too common in farm living, to make some of the barren spots fruitful, to eliminate some of the drudgeries (work for wage is drudgery, but work for better living is play), and by example rather than precept to spread the good news that the men and women whose farms include orchards and gardens are more than landlords and landladies of dirty acres: they are the real lords and ladies of the land. In this aim the editor has striven in the follow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Making a Garden to Bloom This Year The design to be employed for a garden planned for only one season is not so vital as the design which permanent planting de mands; nevertheless, it should be as good as it can be, under the limitations which the character Of the soil may impose, or which are imposed by unalterable condi tions. I speak of the soil conditions sep arately, for ordinary soil is alterable, up to a certain point, even within the limits of a single summer; but there are condi tions which may not be changed within so short a space of time - conditions of shade sometimes, or moisture, or dryness - and there are some imposed by absolutely unalterable physical peculiarities. The garden design, as well as the selection of the plants, must, therefore, conform to these, for even annuals have their prefer ences, which are worth considering and conceding. Book Description
Excerpt from Little Gardens and How to Make the Most of Them The irregular garden plan shown by Fig. 3 will appeal, I think, to the fancy of fewer gardeners, yet it has many good nowts. It gives the charm of mystery to many a walk and nook, while at the same time increasing the number of aspects, and therefore of possibilities. There is a substantial summerhouse in an ever green sheltered corner, which would prove useful also as a. Winter retreat if it could face south or south-west. Safe Rules for Laying out Walks. - Allow for approach to every bit of cultivated ground; give sufficient scope for pleasant pedestrian exercise, create as many new views as possible by turns and branches, yet avoid sacrificing ground unnecessarily. In Fig. 3 it will be seen that there is no path on one side of the lawn, as the flower border can be reached by the turf, and the flowers will look their best against it. A considerable amount of vegetable garden is allowed for, and there is a good rosery. One should always make new walks wide enough for comfort in walking, say a minimum width of 3 feet unless the garden is very small. Fig. 2 would prove more suitable than Fig. 1 for quite a small piece of ground, perhaps, but Fig. 3 could be simplified by making only one lawn and turning the distant grass into kitchen garden. Book Description
Excerpt from Vegetable Gardening and Canning: A Manual for Garden Clubs In club gardening still other advantages are gained, the most important of which is undoubtedly the ability to do team work. Some of us who can do very good work alone, have never learned to pull together. The garden club cannot be a complete success unless its members are willing to join hands in an effort to make theirs the best gardens in the country. If this spirit prevails throughout all the garden ventures, then there will be a great number of successful gardens. But if by some strange mischance no crop at all should result, the fact that you had learned to work together would be a fine reward to you. What I mean is this: aside from the great value of the crop which your gardens will produce, is that equally gr'eat moral value, which some of us do not yet realize, of having learned to pull together.
