The Outsider (Fantasy and Horror Classics)
Author: H. P. Lovecraft
Publisher: Read Books Ltd
ISBN: 1528790375
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 14
Book Description
After spending more time than he can remember on his own inside a castle, an enigmatic man resolves to finally escape and seek human contact and daylight, both of which he has never experienced before. However, dissatisfied with what he finds on the outside, he hastens back to his old world inside his castle—to which he is now barred entry. First published in 1926, "The Outsider" is a short story by American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft that explores the concepts of loneliness and the Gothic ab-human. A fantastic example of Lovecratian supernatural literature not to be missed by fans and collectors of his seminal work. Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American writer of supernatural horror fiction. Though his works remained largely unknown and did not furnish him with a decent living, Lovecraft is today considered to be among the most significant writers of supernatural horror fiction of the twentieth century. Other notable works by this author include: “The Call of Cthulhu”, “The Rats in the Walls”, and “The Shadow Over Innsmouth”. Read & Co. is publishing this classic work now as part of our “Fantasy and Horror Classics” imprint in a new edition with a dedication by George Henry Weiss.

A Mystery of Heroism
Author: Stephen Crane
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 0061915041
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 19
Book Description
Though best known for The Red Badge of Courage, his classic novel of men at war, in his tragically brief life and career Stephen Crane produced a wealth of stories—among them "The Monster," "The Upturned Face," "The Open Boat," and the title story—that stand among the most acclaimed and enduring in the history of American fiction. This superb volume collects stories of unique power and variety in which impressionistic, hallucinatory, and realistic situations alike are brilliantly conveyed through the cold, sometimes brutal irony of Crane's narrative voice.

Secondary Textbook Review
Author:
Publisher: Hippocrene Books
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
This book is intended as a resource for teachers and curriculum developers who select textbooks for secondary English courses. It includes a compilation of 32 factual textbook reviews obtained from the application of a review instrument, which was based on the California "Model Curriculum Standards: Grades Nine through Twelve, English Language Arts" and the "English-Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten through Grade Twelve." The instrument described in the book was applied to selected English composition/grammar and reading/literature textbooks. The book suggests that the resulting reviews can be used by teachers as a screening device to reduce the number of books they review and pilot studies they conduct; thus educators will have more time to do in-depth reviews of two or three textbooks which appear to match their course requirements and their students' academic needs. The book also states that the review instrument can be adapted by districts to reflect their own English objectives and test results. Every review in the book includes two parts and a publisher's description (which appears in the Appendix)--a section which depicts the extent to which the emphasis on content and process is given to each of the topics in the textbooks reviewed, and a section which includes topics on content and processes which might be found only in teachers' editions. The book does not make assessments regarding the quality of the books reviewed, but rather provides information which teachers may find useful in making quality judgments and selecting specific textbooks for English programs.
