Book Description
Excerpt from Fourteen Months in Canton Work were written during a fourteen months' residence in the city of Canton, where I enjoyed many opportunities of seeing the inner life of the Chinese, and of learning much of their daily life in their own homes. The letters were written for circulation amongst my family and a few friends who kindly expre-cd an interest in all I saw and did in the far-ofl' country of China. These descriptive letters accompanied others I wrote at the same time to my family, and so they do not contain any reference to domestic matters neces. Book Description
Excerpt from An Account of the Proceedings of the Government Metropolitan Police in the City of Canton The first step towards this desirable end was effected the moment the new government police appeared upon the streets of Canton; for from that moment the calling of the hours and the springing of rattles, and the drunken brawls with the watchmen ceased, and the burghers of Canton were not disturbed in their sleep, from the time they went to bed until the time they got up; and great was their delight thereat, and loud their praises of the new institution, and of the admirable arrangements of Mr. Commis sioner Vin, father of the present famous Com missioner Lin, the opium destroyer. Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the Congregational Church and Parish of Canton Center, Formerly West Simsbury: Organized 1750 The historical sermon of Rev. Jairus Burt, preached in 1851, gives the only connected history of the Congregational Church in Canton Center, up to that time. As thirty-five years have since elapsed, it seemed desirable for convenience of reference to bring the history down to the present time; this consideration, added to the fact that Mr. Burt's valuable sermon existing only in manuscript, was in imminent danger of perishing, has been the motive in the preparation of this pamphlet. The compilers have studied the utmost brevity, giving only leading facts, in order the more easily' to bring it within the reach of all the living, both resident in the town, and widely scattered throughout the country, who are interested in the history of this ancient church.
