Book Description
Excerpt from The Presbyterian Church in Iowa, 1837-1900: History Scores of geniuses have invented the perpetual motion - in each instance faultless in every respect but one, it would not go. Such was our machine-made history. One Stated Clerk, Brother Nicholas of Iowa, sent me valuable material. Two others sent me interesting items. Weary of trying to make bricks without straw, 'we turned to the General Assembly Minutes of 1837 to 1900 for light. All material facts were before us. Then came a vision of hard work. What plan should we adopt best to serve the church? To have selected a hundred of our best churches and most successful ministers might have insured a readable book. The story of the 200 churches dead, and of their worn out pastors would not have been cheerful reading. We determined to tell brie y the story of all. We found enrolled, between 1837 and 1900, 750 churches and 1200 ministers. The 750 churches had shrunk to 416 by 1900. The 334 were not all dead. Many had changed names. The Cumberland ock has already been folded with ours. All interested parties are hoping and expecting the United Presbyterians to be with us soon. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Illinois, Containing Sketches of the First Ministers, Churches, Presbyteries and Synods: Also a History of Missions, Publication and Education Death knocks with certain footsteps alike at the palace of the rich and the hut of the poor; at the counting-room of the merchant and the study of the man of God. His knock is imperative; and the rich and the poor, the merchant and the man of God, must as certainly answer. On the 14th of September, 1878, the Editor of this History threw down the gauntlet and gave up life's struggle. The course for him then ended; the race for him was run. Sad as every visitation of the dark messenger is, it is infinitely more so when a useful man is stricken down in his usefulness. On account of the unexpected death of the Editor, the foregoing volume is imperfect in some respects. Just what his intention was in reference to this work is not fully known; but it has been carried out so far as ascertained. He evidently intended to prepare a full statistical table for the entire State, showing the numerical and financial strength of the denomination. Other matters of great interest he may have also intended to include in the volume. But he has gone, and there is no means of discovering the intended scope of the work. What is published is just as he left it, with no material alterations. The work is sent out with the hope that it may strengthen the bonds of the Church of God, re-animate and stimulate it, and glorify Him whose humble messenger the Editor was. May the blessings of Heaven go with it! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Why Am I A Cumberland Presbyterian? Has permitted this great spiritual family to be divided into different subordinate families. Of course, in establishing our relations to the Church for ourselves, a choice is to be made. We select one family, one branch of the Church, rather than another. We have reasons for such a choice. These reasons may be wise and weighty; on the other hand, they may deserve but little considera tion; still they are reasons with us. We consider our action intelligent, and they are reasons which influence that action. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
