The Native Races of South Africa
Author: George William Stow

Pages : 690
Book Description
The author of this volume died before it was ready for the press. The illustrations had, most fortunately, been carefully prepared, and they are reproduced by chromolithography, so that they are indistinguishable from the originals, except that most of them have been reduced in size. The manuscript was purchased by Miss Lucy C. Lloyd from Mr. Stow's widow, with the intention of having it published, but other work has prevented that lady from bestowing upon it the time and care needed for its arrangement. In 1904 Miss Lloyd, feeling that a work of such importance ought to be placed before the public without further delay, did the author the honour of submitting the manuscript for the inspection and advice as to what should be done in the matter. Miss Lloyd, who is the greatest living authority upon the Bushmen, attested the accuracy of much in Mr. Stow's description of the customs and mode of life of those people, though she doubted whether his division of that race into the two branches of painters and sculptors could be maintained, thinking it probable that this matter was determined by locality and convenience.

Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Emigrant Boers in South Africa: Or the Wanderings and Wars of the Emigrant Farmers From Their Leaving the Cape Colony to the Acknowledgment of Their Independence by Great Britain After a long residence on the Cape Frontier in a position which brought me into constant contact with the different races, on the outbreak of the Kafiir War towards the close of 1877, I was requested by the Government to undertake a diplomatic task requiring special knowledge of native character. Having suc ceeded in performing the duties entrusted to me, when the war was over I asked for and Obtained the charge of the Colonial Archives preserved in Cape Town. During the period from March 1879 to January 1881 I prepared a volume of Abstracts of Early Cape Records, which was published by the Government, and I collected a quantity of material for a History of the Foundation of the Cape Colony. Transferred again to the Native Department, I returned to the frontier and acted as magistrate of Tamacha until the close of the Basuto war, when I Obtained leave of absence for six months and proceeded to the Hague to complete by research in the Archives of the Netherlands the infor mation required for my early Cape History. That volume was published in Cape Town in 1882, under the title of Chrenicles Of Cape' Commanders a'n Abstract of Original Manuscripts in the Archives of the Cape Colony, dating from 1651 td 1691, compared with Printed Accounts Of the' Settlement by various Visitors during that time.
