Book Description
Excerpt from History, First Baptist Church, Maiden, North Carolina N o effort has been made to include controversies or any matters of an unpleasant nature. That these have existed periodically is only natural and peculiar to all. Churches; however, The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones. It is our pleasure to take pride in the good. With the publishing of this history, First Baptist Church of Maiden embarks on a new phase of its journey. Although we face a new world and a new program, with out precedent to guide us, our yesterdays will aid us great ly to enter successfully into tomorrow. The light of the past will help show us the best path for the future. Just as this history is like a ladder with each pastor as a rung rungs of equal rather than ascending importance so the days of our future history may well form the ladder that leads the church into greater success and significance in the Master's Kingdom. Our wealth of tomorrow depends upon our deposits today. Yesterday we lived in anticipa tion of tomorrow-a tomorrow with adequate buildings and people and ministry. While we may be tempted to live on yesterday's dreams which have become today's realities, let us shun the temptation and move forward and upward upon the rungs of the great spiritual ladder which our great Creator has placed before us. May the joys and de lights of those who pen our history seventy-five years hence be as great as have been ours as we have penned the history of those who have preceded us. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Mountain Grove Baptist Church, Granite Falls, North Carolina The minutes of the Association date back to 1869, and since Mountain Grove was organized in April, 1884 our church has been included in all the minutes since its beginning. Much of our information came from the very early minutes of our own church recorded when Mountain Grove was organized in 1884. It has also been through the cooperation and assistance of many persons that we have been able to compile the historic information in the following pages, gathered into book form and distributed on the 100th anniversary of the church. Randy Gibson, a historian and genealogist, was immensely helpful in the history of many early families and in the organization of this history. We, the committee, make no claim at being trained historians and doubtless have violated some of the principles of historical writing, but we believe there will be few factual errors. It is hoped that those who are interested in history will be able to use this as a reference. In trying to keep the information factual, we have not been able to pay recognition to so many members who have rightfully deserved a place in this history. If we had listed each person who had had a part in the various church activities, or who had given so generously of their time and money to the operation of the church, the list would have been unusually long. Even though this would have been our wish, we ask the understanding of the church membership in this connection. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina We have already said that questions of discipline were almost exclusively left to the white people, but in some instances fairness was shown to the colored brother, and his side received the proper considera tion. We record a single instance of this kind. A conflict ensued between a white brother and a colored sister. When the white brother was heard a motion at once was made to exclude the colored sister without hearing her side, but others insisted and it afterward prevailed to hear her side; and when they had heard her side she was justified and allowed to retain her membership. Notwithstanding there were many obstacles which stood in the way of the religious growth and develop ment of the colored people before the war, there were many devoted Christians among them. Book Description
Excerpt from Deep River Baptist Church, Coleridge, North Carolina: 1882-1982 As anyone who has attempted to write a history knows, it is a long and arduous task. However, it is a task that is at the same time fulfilling and personally interesting. The more hidden facts you uncover from the past, the greater is the desire to find more. The search for the history of Deep River Baptist Church began long before the writing of this book. As is stated in the text, a short history was written in 1944. Though it contained a great deal of information and is very helpful to us, much of it relied on the memories of those involved in composing it. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Baptists in North Carolina Our purpose in producing the following pages is to put in readable form the deeds of our Baptist fathers in the Old North State. To write the history of the North Carolina Baptists is to tread on virgin soil. The task has never been undertaken before, so far as the author knows. Consequently, we do not claim perfection in details of Baptist history in North Carolina. The records were only partially kept in the early days, so that much of the real history of North Carolina Baptists has never been committed to paper. Taking into consideration the lack of information in some places and superabundance of it in others, we have tried to make a connected history, dealing with all characters and events with an impartial pen. Many heroes have not a place in this narrative, ' because scarcely anything-has been preserved from their lives of heroism.
