Webster defines history as "a statement of the progress of a nation or an institution, with philosophical inquiries respecting effects and causes, in distinction from annals, which relate simply the facts and events of each year in strict chronological order, without any observations of the annalist; and from biography, which is the record of an individual's life." The larger the field of the historian, and the longer the period embraced in his work, the more fully can he carry out this definition of the great lexicographer, and make the philosophical element the more prominent. But as his field becomes less, and his time shorter, the more will the annalistic and biographical elements predominate over the philosophical. The stately, but unreadable, histories of Gibbon and Hume, the former covering a period of more than fourteen hundred years, and embracing the whole civilized world, and the latter covering the whole period of English history, afford examples of the one; whilst that most interesting and readable of modern historical-works, Macaulay's England, confined as it is to the events of a brief period, well illustrates the other. Much time and effort, on the part of many people, has been expended to assemble a series of articles, presented in chronological order, unfold ing the development of the church since its birth in 1847. There is, of course, a brief review of the Wesley family and the arrival of the first Methodist workers in the American colonies. On the surface, it will appear that what is herein presented has to do, primarily, with the temporal development of this Society, listing its struggles and victories and noting some of its leadership. Such procedure is only natural as it is the manner in which we are accustomed to write history. As you read the pages, however, you must bear in mind that back of every new building enterprise, every new department organized, every effort for increased attendance and every campaign for funds, is a deep seated spiritual urge upon which the very life of the Society has depended and continues to depend. John Wesley organized Societies in England, wrote volumes, in the form of pamphlets, about every conceivable need of the people, organized a group to carry the message to the new America, and did much else which had to do with the temporal, but it was all undergirded by the Heart Warming experience he received at the Aldersgate Street meeting in England. They were very particular in those days to re cord everything, small and great. What a reproof to the care less manner in which many church records are now kept. The old book is the basis of the work entitled, Lost Chapters Recovered. We do not. Publish all that it con tains, but make extracts from year to year, from the first to the conclusion. This work is something more than a mere local history. It describes the early and great men of Methodism, in whom the great Methodist family have a common interest. To make the chapters as complete as possible, I have not only followed the old book, but availed myself of other material that enriches the volume. Does the reader inquire where this old book has been? I answer, I cannot tell, only it has been lost for over half a century, and very recently discovered. The oldest ministers now in new-york and the oldest trustees had never seen the book. It is ninety years old. It contains chapters of our early history that were entirely new to the present generation. It extends from 1768 to 1797. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities.
